SIPRI seeks a seasoned Research/Project Assistant to conduct research for the project's managers and scholars.
Context
Established in 1966, SIPRI is consistently ranked as one of the world's top think tanks. The institute is dedicated to independent research into peace, conflict and security and is known worldwide for its flagship publication, the SIPRI Yearbook, and its databases. SIPRI is based in Stockholm, and has well-established, on-the-ground partnerships and operational networks across the globe. The staff of SIPRI is international and the working language is English.
While some established and well-connected family-run businesses in Afghanistan with strong ethnic and tribal links have been able to improve their private sector engagement since 2002, their activities have mostly advanced the interests of the elite from the civil and security sectors; there has been little room for emerging mid-level entrepreneurs and investors in the private sector, especially in rural areas, without the necessary political, familial or tribal connections.
Without substantial and inclusive socioeconomic development Afghanistan's security situation is likely to deteriorate. This joint SIPRI-International Council of Swedish Industry (NIR) project will examine the current position and potential of Afghanistan?s private sector and identify achievable and realistic long-term objectives and policy recommendations, which will benefit the development of the private sector and the business environment during Afghanistan's 2015 to 2024 transformation period. It is also intended to assess the opportunities for Swedish organisations to engage in the development of the private sector in Afghanistan.
Eligibility requirements
SIPRI seeks a dynamic and efficient individual to support this project?s scholars by researching relevant literature, analyzing articles and books, and reviewing and editing papers. Position will also help with events organization and project related logistical and possible administrative tasks. The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently and under great pressure. This individual would work for both SIPRI and NIR, yet be based at SIPRI.
