The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is seeking a Research Assistant to support and contribute to high quality research on topics related to peace and development. This will be done primarily through quantitative research support revolving around data collection, organization, visualization and related statistical analysis. The work will also entail literature reviews and background analyses. The Research Assistant will work with Senior Researchers and Researchers as appropriate.

SIPRI is an independent international institute whose core mission is to undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace. Established in 1966, SIPRI provides data, analysis and recommendations, based on open sources, to policymakers, researchers, media and the interested public. SIPRI's research theme of "Peace and Development" explores the conditions conducive to peace and peaceful development, focusing on how policy and practice measures can contribute to creating the enabling conditions that promote a lasting peace. A crucial part of SIPRI's work on Peace and Development is the Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development. Held annually, the Stockholm Forum brings together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to address the most pressing issues relevant for achieving peace.



Main tasks

The main tasks of the Research Assistant are:

• Participate in research projects as directed;
• Collect, code, organize, and visualize data;
• Conduct statistical analyses under supervision;
• Conduct literature reviews and analyses as directed;
• Contributions to shorter written outreach outputs, interviews and presentations;
• Contributing with background materials for use in research proposal writing;
• Develop research skills and knowledge in the area of work
• Contribute to the collective life of the Institute.



Requirements

The successful candidate must have:

• A university degree or degrees, in disciplines and topics relevant to this area of study, at Bachelor's or Master's level.
• One year of relevant professional experience in research, including relevant quantitative methods, writing and organizational skills;
• Familiarity with concepts relevant for peace and development, including: peacebuilding, development cooperation, fragile and conflict-affected countries, gender, resilience, inclusion;
• Knowledge of peace, conflict, stability, and fragility issues in different regions and development contexts, familiarity with conflict studies in at least one region; and
• Fluency in English. Additional languages are an advantage..



Contract period

Starting 15 February 2021 or as soon as possible, the contract period will initially last for 2 years with possibility of extension. The post is full-time. The post requires that the candidate becomes a resident in Stockholm, Sweden by the time of employment. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
