International IDEA's mission is to support sustainable democratic change by providing comparative knowledge, and assisting in democratic reform, and influencing policies and politics.
International IDEA acts as a catalyst for democracy building; by providing knowledge resources, policy proposals and supporting democratic reforms in response to specific national requests. It works together with policy makers, governments, UN organizations and agencies and regional organizations engaged in the field of democracy building.
International IDEA develops, shares and enables the use of comparative knowledge in its key areas of expertise: electoral processes,constitution building,political participation and representation, democracy and development and democracy assessments.
It also addresses the important issues of gender, diversity, and conflict and security as they relate to democracy.
International IDEA is based in Stockholm, Sweden, and works worldwide through offices in New York, Brussels, The Hague, Latin America, Africa and Asia.
Dina arbetsuppgifterResearch Assistant Activities:
The Research Assistant is expected to perform the following tasks:
• Map and identify datasets and indicators that match the Global State of Democracy Index indicators;
• Work with the Methodologist/Data Manager for the development of a data codebook based on the criteria set in the Index methodology;
• Systematically collect, code and insert each data point into a database that will serve for the construction of the Global State of Democracy Index;
• Cite the relevant data sources for each data entry as instructed by the Methodologist/Data Manager;
• Provide any additional support to the DAAA Unit and/or the Methodologist/Data Manager;
• Participate with the DAAA Democracy Index working group in internal planning and coordination meetings when instructed by the Head of the DAAA Unit;
• Actively integrate gender, diversity and conflict sensitivity perspectives in all activities.
Datasets that will be considered for inclusion in the Index are, among others, V-Dem data, International IDEA's own datasets, the Quality of Government Indicators, the Freedom House, and other credible datasets. Depending on the availability of reliable data, the data collection shall mainly focus on the 173 countries for which V-DEM data has been collected.
Utbildning och erfarenhetQualifications and required skills
The Research Assistant should have the following skills and experience:
• An academic background in social science, statistics or political science, with a focus on quantitative measurement methodologies and statistics.
• Minimum 2 years' experience in comparative research and data collection.
• Good understanding of democratic concepts and principles.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office package (including Excel), Internet, as well as statistical analysis software such as SPSS.
• Advanced research skills and attention to detail.
• Fluent written and oral English required. Working use of French, Arabic, or Spanish an advantage.
• Ability to meet tight deadlines and work effectively under pressure.
• Ability to work independently or under minimum supervision.
• Ability to look through a diversity and gender lens.
