• Support the West Africa programme's strategy and implementation: with the Programme Director and other colleagues involved;
• Support capacity-building of West African civil society organizations to strengthen their abilities to contribute to policy development, including by engaging with the main stakeholders;
• Develop activity budgets, requests for funds and proposals and manage financial audits with the Programme Director, Senior Researchers and Grants Manager;
• Actively contribute to the logistical organisation of events in West Africa and in Sweden, in collaboration with other researchers and partner organisations;
Main tasks and responsibilities
• Contribute to the management of budgets and financial documents related to civil society monitoring and reporting of safety and security at the community level in Mali, Niger and Chad;
• Support (including logistics and administration) workshops in the region and in Europe.
• Contribute to the reporting of project findings to the sponsor of the project and other project stakeholders.
• Help to identify possible activities for future projects in West Africa and fundraising.
The project requires fluency in written and spoken English and French. The position might involve travel to West Africa.
SIPRI seeks a Research Assistant to work as part of the team in the Institutes work in West Africa and the Sahel, namely on two projects, 'Building Sustainable Peace in Mali' and a project on the analysis of the security and justice sectors in Niger and Chad. Funding for these projects are provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and European Union respectively.
The main focus for this position is to work on administrative and finance management.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
• A degree (Master's preferred) in a relevant discipline.
• Two years of research assistance or project/programme coordination;
• Previous experience in elaborating budgets, managing financial and organisational audits with a solid knowledge of international accounting procedures;
• Experience in fund-raising, with proposal and grant writing skills;
• Knowledge of francophone African history, economic, political, safety and security issues, and gender-related challenges (UNSCR 1325) as well as experience working with civil society, are assets;
• Previous experience in planning and organisation of high-level events in Europe and Africa is desirable;
• Attention to detail;
• Fluency in written and spoken English and French;
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Varaktighet, arbetstid
Starting from 1 January 2018, or as soon as possible. The appointment will be, initially, for a one-year period, and renewable. The post is full-time, and the successful applicant will be expected to reside in Stockholm with travel to West Africa.
