Today, the Programme on Armed Conflict and Conflict Management provides the main platform within SIPRI for critical research, analysis, and recommendations in relation to the nature, major actors, and overall trends in conflict and armed violence, peace operations, and post-conflict peace building activities. The programme?s research takes a comprehensive approach to the study of violence and to the efforts to prevent, manage and resolve conflict. Special attention is devoted to placing conflict analysis within the broader context of international policy on security and development.
SIPRI currently has a vacancy for a Research Assistant within the Armed Conflict and Conflict Management Programme to support its developing initiative on conflict and security issues in Eurasia, including the Arctic region.
The major responsibilities of this position will include:
• Participating in the work of the ?Arctic Futures: Managing Competition and Promoting Cooperation? project;
• Monitoring current events and developments in Eurasian security and politics, using primary and secondary sources, and providing regular updates on research findings;
• Providing research assistance to the Programme?s staff as required;
• Assisting with the organization of travel, meetings, and conferences;
• Producing data and text for SIPRI publications;
• Assisting in updating the programme website.
The successful candidate will have some of following experience and preferred qualifications/skills:
• Demonstrated an understanding and competence in the Programme?s research agenda;
• A Master?s degree in international relations, peace and conflict studies, political science, or related social science discipline;
• Relevant professional experience an advantage;
• Proficiency in written and spoken English and Russian are both required;
• Strong knowledge of security and conflict issues in Eurasia, including Arctic issues;
• Attention to detail;
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an international environment.
