hela Sverige The Radiation Protection Group within the Environment, Safety & Health Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for the position as Radioactive Waste Manager.
Description of directorate/division
The Environment, Safety & Health Division, reporting to the associate Director of ESH and Quality, is responsible for activities connected to safety (radiological safety, occupational safety, fire protection, emissions etc.) of people on-site as well as for the public. The ESH Division consists of two groups: The Radiation Protection (RP) Group and the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Group. In addition to the two groups, there is staff working with radiation safety, safety training and environment reporting directly to the Head of Division. Presently, we are eight persons in the Radiation Protection group and in total nineteen persons within the ESH Division.
Description of main responsibilities
The main task and responsibility for the Radioactive waste manager is to lead the work with the ESS radioactive waste program, which is part of the services provided by the ESS Radiation Protection group. The radioactive waste program involves all activities concerning classification, handling, treatment, storage and transport of radioactive waste.
As the Radioactive Waste Manager, you will:
• Ensure compliance with the environmental and radiological permits and conditions, ESS rules and procedures regarding radioactive waste
• Be responsible for developing and manage the ESS radioactive waste program. This includes:
• Development and implementation of systems to dispose radioactive waste from generation of waste enquiry, waste consignment information, variation forms, waste assurance and through to transport paperwork. Whilst also checking balances against the site's solid waste discharge authorisation
• Understand activity assessment methods, types of waste, radionuclides and their treatment
• Prepare documents for requirements and procedures for radioactive waste management and decommissioning
• Set up and maintain contracts with waste handling companies and the company for final disposal
• Ensure necessary analyses as required by the radioactive waste program
• Ensure volumes for free-release and disposal
• Develop cost estimates for handling and disposal of radioactive waste
• Develop cost estimates for decommissioning
• Provide an effective waste management service on-site
• Support the licensing process by providing adequate reports, conclusions and analyses in the area of Radioactive Waste and Decommissioning.
• Support effective deployment of ESS-wide policies, processes, systems and procedures ensuing that at all times ESS remains compliant
• Provide specialist advise on radioactive waste matters to ESS management, ESS staff, In-kind contributors and users of the ESS experimental stations in the role of a radiation protection expert for radiation waste management program in the RP group
Qualifications
You have a well-developed ability to lead, listen, consult others and to communicate proactively with a high level of integrity. You need to have:
• Documented experience from leading projects or line management experience
• Degree in Engineering or Science in relevant discipline with relevant experience.
• Holding expert certification in radiation protection from a national institute.
• Knowledge of European and Swedish regulations
• Ideally accredited to an appropriate professional body
• DGSA qualification desirable but not essential

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
