hela Sverige The Environment, Safety & Health Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a position as Group Leader of the Radiation Protection Group.
Description of directorate/division
The Environment, Safety & Health (ESH) Division, reporting to the Associate Director of ESH and Quality supports, monitors and assures the implementation of ESS policies, rules, processes, objectives as well as best practices at all levels of the organisation in ESH matters. In order to start preparing for the commissioning of the ESS facility as well as for the future operation, the ESH division has since July 1st 2017 been re-organized forming two groups: the Radiation Protection (RP) Group and the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Group. For both these groups, ESS has opened up new positions as Group Leaders.
Presently, the ESH Division is a team of 13 persons. Five (5) of them are in the RP Group. The group will substantially expand its staff and activities in the upcoming years in order to meet the needs of the organisation.
Description of the position
For the installation, commissioning and operation of the ESS facility, the RP group is responsible for radiation protection, handling & transports of radioactive waste and other radioactive substances.
The RP group is responsible for justification of work with ionizing radiation, compliance with regulation regarding radiation protection and will lead the implementation of the ALARA principle to all activities within ESS facilities with regards to radiation exposure of staff, users, visitors and the public.
The group is responsible for the future handling of radioactive waste, including contracts for external radioactive waste handling suppliers and suppliers for possible intermediate storage and final disposal of the waste. For the highly activated target components, coordination will be done together with the Target Division.
As for the present phase of the ESS project, the RP group is directly responsible for the design and installation of:
• Radiation Monitoring System
• Radiological Environmental Monitoring System
• Dosimetry System
• Radioactive Waste Handling Systems
The RP group is responsible for all issues related to:
• Radiation Protection rules, procedure & guidelines
• Estimation of doses during normal operation (workers and environment)
• Estimation of doses during accident scenarios (workers and environment)
• Estimation of radioactive waste (types, volumes & costs) arising from operation and decommissioning
These tasks are also part of the support given to the on-going Licensing work towards the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM)
You are expected to be an active and driving contributor in the ESH&Q management team.
Required competencies:
• Master of Science/Engineering in radiation protection/radiation physics or similar
• Experience of radiological protection issues for a large-scale scientific facility, preferably an accelerator driven one.
• Management experience (project or line organization) from medium sized (5 - 15 resources) teams
• Experience from working in project/line matrix organizations and experience from estimation, planning, resource allocation and execution of project work
Your English skills need to be very good in both verbal and written form.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months' initial probationary period; the position is to be filled as soon as possible. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
