The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) Uppsala is now recruiting a professor in ecology with focus on the role of plant communities in sustainable production ecosystems.
This fully-funded professorship is based at the Department of Ecology that is part of the SLU Ecology Centre together with the Department of Crop Production Ecology,
https://www.slu.se/en/departments/ecology/ovrigt/ecology-centre/. Research and education at the Ecology Centre focuses on food and animal feed production, biomass and energy and how these interact with the environment. We explore how environmental conditions, ecology interactions and cultivation system designs affect not only yields and ecosystem services, but also product quality. The SLU Ecology Centre is a Nordic and European hub for sustainable agriculture, crop and environmental protection, wildlife management, honey bee health and forestry.
Subject area
The subject area includes basic and applied questions with focus on the role of plant communities in sustainable production ecosystems of foods and bio raw materials, relevant to Swedish agriculture. The subject draws on empirical research and theories in community ecology and/or systems ecology.
Duties
The position includes the following tasks:

• contributing to the development of sustainable crop production systems through research, teaching and collaboration within academia, industry, organisations and society at large;

• developing and running third-cycle courses and study programmes and doctoral student supervision;
• collaborating with research teams in the department, at the faculty and SLU;
• providing information about research findings and sharing relevant knowledge with society at large.
Swedish and English are used in parallel at the department. The successful applicant will need to be able to conduct the majority of their duties in English. However, as Swedish is the university's principal language, the successful applicant will be expected to have professional working knowledge of the language within four years of taking up the professorship. The department will provide support with language learning.
