Christopher Gillberg's research group has for many years engaged in epidemiologic, clinical and neurophysiologic research and showed that autistic symptoms are dimensionally distributed in the population and autism spectrum disorders are more common than have been supposed.
Further, specific brain abnormalities have been identified using brain imaging, and clinical research has been indicative in identifying specific genetic markers for autism spectrum disorders.

Subject area
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, specializing in Autism Spectrum Disorders
Specific subject description
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a concept for a number of conditions characterised by impairments including social interaction, social communication and social imagination. The aetiology of ASD is more or less unknown. The last few years the registered prevalence of ASD has increased dramatically and therefore it is of great importance to elucidate if this is a true rise. This issue will be investigated using a Swedish twin material.
Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain indicates both under- and over-connectivity in individuals with ASD. A study using magnetoencephalography on longitudinally defined
individuals with ASD is under preparation. The candidate will investigate these patients using a neuropsychological test battery and parental interviews.
The applicant is expected to have expertise in epidemiology and interest in brain imaging methods and clinical research.
Job assignments
Research on the topic above, using various research methods including clinical trials in patients (neuropsychological testing), twin studies and the use of brain imaging devices. The duties also
include supervision of students and teaching, mainly in child, adolescent and forensic psychiatry.
