Structure studies of metacaspases: activation, specificity, regulation, and diversity
This open position is part of a recruitment campaign to launch a 5-year project supported by Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation and aimed to advance our mechanistic understanding of metacaspase family proteases. The project will develop through a close cooperation between five research groups located in Uppsala BioCenter at SLU and Umeå University and possessing complementary expertise in biochemistry, structural biology, drug design and plant cell and developmental biology. The successful candidate for this position will join the Biotechnology group at the Department of Molecular Sciences, Uppsala BioCenter.
Uppsala BioCenter brings together scientists and students from the Departments of Molecular Sciences, Forest Mycology and Plant Pathology and Plant Biology. The Departments share advanced technological platforms and enjoy both basic and applied research across all kingdoms of life, thus offering a stimulating environment for scientific development and education.
Department of Molecular Sciences conducts research and education in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, food science and microbiology with focus on fundamental biological processes as well as sustainable development and applications in the Green sector.
Duties: Metacaspases are a family of cysteine proteases that have been linked to regulation of aging and cell fate in diverse organisms. However, molecular components and mechanisms of metacaspase-driven processes remain largely unknown, precluding our understanding and potential application in biotechnology and medicine. The purpose in this project is to express representative metacaspase enzymes and elucidate mechanisms of catalysis, specificity, activation and regulation at a molecular level. The research will involve X-ray crystallography and complementary protein structure methods, together with biochemical, enzymatic and mutational studies, in close collaboration with cell and plant biology and drug design partners in the consortium.
Qualifications: We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with strong analytical skills and keen interest in understanding enzymatic mechanisms and proteolysis, in particular. Documented experience in protein structure-function research as well as recombinant protein expression is required. Other valued merits include knowledge and practical experience of X-ray crystallography, other protein structure methods (e.g. cryoEM, SAXS, NMR), homology modeling, protein expression in eukaryotes (e.g. Pichia pastoris), enzymology, proteomics, computational chemistry (MD simulation, QM calculations, etc.), ligand docking and bioinformatics. Excellent communication skills in both oral and written English are expected. To be eligible for a postdoctoral position, the applicant must have a PhD degree in life sciences obtained within the last four years. More senior candidates with relevant experience and strong publication record are welcome to apply as well; if selected they will be employed as a researcher.
Place of work: Uppsala
Employment: This is initially a two-year position with the possibility of extension
Extent: 100%
