Postdoctoral Fellowship in Indian colonial and British imperial history, specifically the social history of technology and entrepreneurship.
Linnaeus University Center: Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies was established in 2012 as a leading research environment at Linnaeus University in Växjö/Kalmar Sweden.
This research center seeks to expand the understanding of conflicting and simultaneous claims regarding culture and history. Influences by postcolonial concern with recovering the voice and agency of the subaltern, the principal purpose is to investigate various cultural archives- formal and informal, traditional and digital, fiction and documentary text, in order to map multiple and concurring claims of reality, experience and meaning in time and place. The center's broad geographical spread and Nordic perspectives offer a substantial intervention into an international debate that has primarily built on British and American research and examples. The scholarship supported by the center aims for a deeper understanding of how voices and narratives become structured culturally, politically, and mentally in the meeting between scholars and their sources, in the formation of colonial archives, and in cultural encounters. http://lnu.se/lnuc/concurrences The Center is now announcing a postdoctoral position open for scholars in all fields with a focus on postcolonial studies: The Linnaeus University has a deposition from Riksarkivet consisting of a historical archive from the Huseby manor outside the town Växjö. The founder of the archive, Joseph Stephens, purchased the manor from profit he made as a railway contractor in India. The archive spans from the sixteenth century to the middle of the 20th. The archival documents collected during Stephens' work in India dates from the 1850s and 60s. As part of the postdoctoral position, the fellow is expected to develop research in relation to the Indian section of the archive, its global connections and locally specific contexts in India.
Responsibilities The primary responsibility is to conduct research. The applicant is expected to contribute to the development of the center through research and publications within areas defined in the center, participate in seminars and other activities of the center, and collaborate with other scholars within the center. Another important expectation is to apply for external funding.
A maximum of 20% of the time is dedicated to teaching and administration. The position is limited to two years fulltime and the place is Växjö.
Basic eligibility
To be eligible for the position as postdoctor the applicant must have completed a PhD (or the equivalent) no earlier than five years prior to the application deadline and is expected to have prior experience of research in archives. In addition applicants may not previously have held a similar position for more than one year at the Linnaeus University.
Additional requirements
It is deemed meritorious to have developed research project specifically in the above mentioned area within postcolonial studies. Experience in interdisciplinary networks is an advantage, as well as experience of research in British colonial archives. Documented skills in cooperation and teamwork will be valued in the selection process.
