Krefting Research Centre, Institute of Medicine, University of Gothenburg, is recruiting a post-doctoral researcher (data scientist/statistician) for a 2-year contract. Krefting Research Centre (
http://krefting.gu.se) is a centre funded by the VBG Group Herman Krefting Foundation for Asthma and Allergy Research. The core research at Krefting Research Centre focuses on asthma, respiratory conditions, and allergy, covering basic mechanistic research, clinical studies, and population investigations. The main data resource for these strands of investigations come from the ongoing West Sweden Asthma Study, one of the largest Europe's population-based studies on asthma and lung disease initiated in 2008 in the region of Västra Götaland in western part of Sweden. As an ongoing research, with about 14,000 adults being followed up longitudinally and another 25,000 planned for longitudinal follow-up, enormous amount of data are now being generated, which will no doubt provide the basis for addressing important questions with clinical impact. There are ongoing plans to,
in due course, link the data being generated from this study to other population registers, such as prescription registers.
Krefting Research Centre comprises of over 20 researchers and research nurses divided into three research areas: epidemiology of asthma, mechanistic studies of inflammation, and extracellular vesicles. Direct supervision for the recruited postdoctoral researcher will be one of the group leaders at Krefting Research Centre, Associate Senior Lecturer Bright Nwaru, who utilizes the data resources of the West Sweden Asthma Study and other international population data resources to address questions in his area of research focus. Bright Nwaru is associated to the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) (
https://wcmtm.gu.se/), a recently established centre at the University of Gothenburg funded by the Wallenberg Foundation in cooperation with AstraZeneca and the Sahlgrenska University Hospital/Västra Götaland Region.
Subject area
Statistics, data science
Subject area description
There are currently few population-representative longitudinal studies on asthma with detailed data and careful clinical phenotyping. Enormous amount of data are continuously being generated from the West Sweden Asthma Study, which
need to be harness to address clinically important questions on asthma, allergy, and respiratory diseases.
Job assignments
The successful candidate will provide advanced data science/statistical expertise to projects undertaken at the Krefting Research Centre and will be expected to work closely with researchers and collaborating partners at the University of Gothenburg. The post particularly entails that the successful candidate takes responsibility for developing and implementing state-of-the-art protocols and algorithms for data management, data mining and analysis, and interpretation of findings from projects at Krefting Research Centre. A core aspect of the work package is to create a state-of-the-art database using platforms such as SQL or other relevant platforms, which will continuously host the data emanating from the West Sweden Asthma Study. The post holder will thus implement the creation of such a database and will support the data science and statistical aspects of an expanding program of epidemiological and clinical studies within Krefting Research Centre and WCMTM. In addition to advising and supporting senior researchers at the centre in data-related projects, the post holder will also be expected to participate in mentoring early career researchers, such as PhD
researchers, with regards to developing data analysis skills. The post holder will take accountability for ensuring that the quality of data, data management, and analyses of projects undertaken at Krefting Research Centre meet the highest international standards. The post holder will be responsible for writing the data/statistical sections of final reports and scientific publications emanating from projects undertaken. The post holder will also be expected to present project results at national and international scientific meetings.
Eligibility
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older
than 3 years from the application deadline.
Assessment
To be qualified for the position the applicant must hold a PhD in data science, statistics or a related discipline. The candidate should have strong computational skills, which are supported by excellent understanding and proficient practical experiences in a statistical or programming language, e.g. R, Stata, SAS, MATLAB, Python, etc. Previous experiences in creating databases for hosting research data is essential for this post. The successful candidate is expected to have experience in working with population-based health and clinical or related large complex datasets. Knowledge in developing and applying machine learning approaches to data mining and analysis will be desirable for the successful candidate, but is not essential. Also desirable is that the successful candidate has advanced experience in statistical modelling, such as in simulation studies, risk modelling, and Bayesian modelling. The successful candidate is expected to be able to work independently as well as collaborate with researchers across Krefting Research Centre, University of Gothenburg and Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Excellent knowledge in written and spoken English is a requirement.
How to apply
Desirable that the application is written in English as the recruiter has English as a native language.
In order to apply for a position at the University of Gothenburg, you have to register an account in our online recruitment system. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the application.
