www.ltu.se/architecture.Subject description
Architecture comprises building design, urban and traffic planning, where aesthetics is joined with functional, technical, practical and economic dimensions in relation to people, sustainability, landscape, and the built environment.
Project description
The main goal of the project Advancing Sami Spatial Planning through Participatory Design is to explore participatory design models that integrate Sami cultural values and knowledge into spatial planning. The project addresses the rapid transformations of Northern Sweden and Sápmi, driven by global resource demands and industrialization. In Giron/Kiruna, expanding mining and subsequent urban development severely impact reindeer herding and risk displacing Sami institutions to other parts of Sápmi. A lack of Sami cultural understanding among planners exacerbates this issue.
The project is a collaboration between architecture researchers at LTU and the nomadic Sami art institution Verdde. Your work in this project will be using a hybrid approach combining artistic research methods and participatory design in the co-creation of Verdde's project Oadjut which aims to build the first public Sami architecture constructed from a Sami perspective in Giron. You will conduct explorations of artistic methodologies in fieldwork, plan and implement participatory design activities in collaboration with Verdde and disseminate academic and artistic results.
Duties
You are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research but you will also be expected to co-supervise graduate students and collaborate with PhD-students. In addition, you may take part in other teaching activities at the department. A post-doctoral researcher is expected to take significant responsibility for planning and managing their own project. The post-doctoral position is situated within the Architecture research subject and connected to the cross-disciplinary LTU Arts-Based Research Center.
Qualifications
In order to be eligible for employment as post doctor you must have a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in Architecture or other disciplines relevant to conduct the research, e.g. Art or Anthropology. A doctoral degree awarded no more than three years before the application deadline provides a useful qualification. Candidates who have been awarded a doctoral degree at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds, for example, different types of statutory leave of absence.
During evaluation, special emphasis is placed on:
• Knowledge and experience relevant to participatory or community projects in theory and/or practice
• Knowledge and experience relevant to Sami or other Indigenous communities
• Experience in artistic research methodologies within architecture or other artistic disciplines
• Communication and collaboration skills
• Quality and relevance of publications
• Quality of PhD thesis
• Personal characteristics relevant to conducting participatory/community research
We are looking for researchers who can work independently as well as in a group. You must have excellent communication skills and be fluent in spoken and written English. Additional proficiency in a Sami and/or a Scandinavian language is advantageous but not a requirement.
We believe that a successful candidate has a strong interest in indigenous architecture. Previous experience of participatory design processes in indigenous communities is meritorious.
