Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets
The van der Post lab is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join our team to investigate how microbial metabolites regulate intestinal stem cell proliferation.
Subject area
Mucosal biology
Subject area description
Intestinal epithelial renewal is maintained by constant proliferation of colonic stem cells, essential for functioning and barrier integrity. Despite of evidence that our microbiota affects epithelial renewal, the effects and mechanisms regulating stem cell proliferation is known for a relatively low number of metabolites. Revealing how microbial metabolites can regulate proliferation of stem cells is of importance for defining epithelial renewal and regeneration during intestinal homeostasis and disease, such as ulcerative colitis. With the overall aim to develop novel strategies to modulate intestinal stem cell proliferation via the diet or supplements.
Duties
In this project, the candidate will investigate how epithelial renewal is regulated by the presence and metabolic activity of the microbiome, focusing specifically on the role of microbial metabolites. The goal is to identify key regulators of intestinal stem cell proliferation and elucidate the mechanisms by which microbial signals influence epithelial regeneration. We will apply various complementary techniques to explore this question to enhance our understating of the intricate interaction between the host and microbiota.

Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.
Assessment criteria
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in epithelial cell biology, with experience in culturing primary intestinal cells and applying high-throughput screening methodologies. Experience with techniques such as proteomics, advanced microscopy, and in vivo models is highly desirable. Great emphasis will be placed on the candidate's personal suitability for the position and clear interest in the subject area. Good knowledge of English, both written and spoken, is necessary.
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
