The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 49 000 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The interdisciplinary research center SWEMARC, Swedish Mariculture Research Centre, at Sea and Society at the University of Gothenburg invites applications for a postdoctor at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.

SWEMARC brings together research groups in the fields of economy, social sciences, law, oceanography, biology and design, with the aim of using transdisciplinary research to develop sustainable marine aquaculture systems for plants and animals in order to increase sustainable food and biomass production for a growing population. As part of this interdisciplinary research, the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) is now recruiting a postdoctor in fish physiology with focus on wolffish farming biology and feed development.

Project description
The position is placed within the project ARCTAQUA (https://blogg.nord.no/arctaqua/),
a collaboration between researchers in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The ARCTAQUA main objective is to promote the development of sustainable aquaculture in the Arctic region. In Europe and Russia the aquaculture production volume has not followed the increased demand for aquaculture products. The diversification of the produced aquaculture species has the potential to answer to the markets demand for fish protein. The ARCTAQUA will address main bottlenecks in the production of novel fish species (Arctic char, spotted wolffish, European whitefish and nelma). This position focuses on spotted wolffish, which is a potential species for cold-water marine aquaculture. It is now commercially produced on a small scale with future expansion dependent on tackling the remaining bottlenecks related with its production such as optimal feed composition for different life-stages using sustainable marine sources, teeth mineralization and kidney stone formation. In ARCTAQUA we will focus on optimizing the start-feeding conditions, developing on-growth diets tailored for this species, as well as optimal health and welfare.

The position is located at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science (BioEnv), Zoology building, Medicinaregatan 18, Gothenburg, where you will work in the research group led by Prof Kristina Sundell. Some experiments and analyzes may be conducted at Nord university, Bodö, Norway and at the marine research station Kristineberg.

Job assignments
This employment includes conducting experiments that aim to investigate effects of new feeds on the growth, feed efficiency, appetite, health and the welfare of wolffish at larvae, fry and juvenile on-growth stages in collaboration with partners at Nord University. The work is experimental within the field of animal physiology. The work includes all aspects of research into aquaculture-biology, including routine animal husbandry, building and surveillance of aquaria systems, experimental design and design of feeds, sampling and analyzes, statistical analysis, compilation of results and writing of articles for scientific journals. The applicant is expected to be independent and to be able to take own initiatives within the framework of the project. The applicant will work in a dynamic research group where support is always available if needed, however the applicant is expected to take responsibility of this part of the project so that it may proceed according to plan. The applicant is expected to present the findings at conferences, seminars, and project meetings and reports for ARCTAQUA. As a member of SWEMARC the applicant is also expected to participate in center activities as well as to communicate and cooperate with other members of SWEMARC and national and international colleagues.

Supervision of students may be included as well as other teaching and/or administrative duties (max 20%). Shorter periods with work at other laboratories and other countries may be included.

The employment
The employment is a full-time position for two years starting as soon as possible or upon agreement.
