We are looking for a Postdoc researcher who will study deterioration effects such as reinforcement corrosion, freeze-and thawing, and cracking. Your research will contribute to increased knowledge on the importance of cracks in reinforced concrete structures, thus ensuring safety in the long term yet avoiding too strict demands. Thereby, the results will contribute to improved durability of reinforced concrete structures, reduced use of resources, lower life-cycle costs for civil engineering structures, and contribute to a more sustainable society.

Research environment

The position is placed at Chalmers in the research area Concrete Structures, which is part of the Division of Structural Engineering at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Concrete Structures at Chalmers is internationally well-known for its expertise in assessment of existing reinforced concrete structures. Other focus areas are the use of innovative materials in concrete such as fibres and textiles. We prioritise an inclusive and supportive work environment where diverse perspectives are valued, and every team member is encouraged to contribute and grow. Parts of the project is carried out in collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology,

Project overview

The aim of the Postdoc project is to contribute to increased knowledge on the complex interaction between cracks and deterioration effects. In current codes, the crack width on the concrete surface is limited, to obtain durable structures. There is also a large focus on cracks and crack widths at inspections of existing structures. However, despite major research efforts, the effect of cracks on durability is still debated. Ongoing long-term tests will be combined with accelerated testing methods. X-ray imaging is used as a powerful tool, in combination with other methods.

Major responsibilities

• Conduct independent research and contribute to the project's scientific goals (80%)
• Support education and research-related activities at the department (20%), including supervision of MSc and PhD students
• Possibilities for international collaboration and research exchanges
• Access to pedagogical training and development

Qualifications

To qualify for the position, you must have:

• A PhD in Structural Engineering, Building Materials, or a closely related field, awarded no more than three years before the application deadline*
• Strong communication skills and fluency in written and spoken English

Meritorious experience and skills

• Experimental research related to deterioration mechanisms, particularly reinforcement corrosion
• Data and image processing
• Programming skills (e.g. Python or MATLAB)
• Statistical analysis
• A strong publication record

* The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.

Contract terms

This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two to three years.
