hela Sverige Mid Sweden University has more than 20,000 students and has campuses in Härnösand, Sundsvall and Östersund. We offer 50 general programmes, 30 Master?s programmes and 750 courses in a wide range of fields; we are also a major player in distance and net-based education. Mid Sweden University has an annual turnover of SEK 845 million and has more than 900 employees, of which 70 are professors and 200 are research students. Research profiles are forest as a resource and mountain regions, within the two thematic areas of Business and Growth and Quality of Life and Welfare.
Mid Sweden University welcomes applications for the post of PhD Students in Materials Physics and Engineering at the Department of Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics
Ref. no. MIUN 2012/185
Subject area: This project concerns theoretical and experimental studies of time-dependent, stochastic failure of materials, specifically fibre-based materials such as paper and paper-based composites. Materials often fail, unexpectedly, under the fluctuating conditions of relatively low-level of mechanical and environmental stresses. Biological systems also exhibit similar behaviour. The underlying mechanism is the nonlinear damage evolution in a micro scale, and the propagation of the damages in a macro scale in a highly coupled system. This complex system behaviour is not only of scientific interest, but also of practical significance to the design of corrugated board packaging. The candidates are expected to perform either analytical/numerical modelling or instrumental/experimental studies. Depending on the competency profile and interests of the candidates, we may hire two PhD students. The theoretical work may include the investigation of damage evolution law and complex behaviour, and the development of stochastic failure models using discrete element or finite element formulations. The experimental work may include the development of high through-put testing systems and associated software codes for measuring time-dependent failure of fibre based materials, and the analyses of stochastic failure mechanisms.
Qualifications: The candidates must hold a Bachelor?s or Master?s degree of physical sciences and engineering, with a strong background in mathematics and physics. Strong communication skills are another requirement. Prior work experience is considered to be an asset.
Place of work: The post is based in the city of Sundsvall, a university town located in the geographical centre of Sweden, offering comfortable student life and numerous nature attractions. It is also the home land of forest-product-related industries and their research centres.
Start date: Immediate.
