K3 is a multidisciplinary school with approximately 80 employees and 1000 full-time students. The school's education and research deal with design, media, art, culture and society and it plays an important role in the Öresund region's cultural life. K3 offers PhD education in Interaction Design and Media and Communication Studies.
At the heart of K3's Interaction Design programme is a commitment to developing responsive and creative approaches to current and future challenges. With a legacy in participatory design, expanded by on-going research in embodied interaction, social innovation, materials experimentation, design theory and critique, we integrate theoretically rich and practically intensive processes. A departmental track record in supporting research in New Media, Public Spheres and Forms of Expression provides further context for the exploration of designed interactions, ensuring an outward societal focus that is consistent with the vision for Malmö University as a whole. If you are interested in how design processes, systems and artefacts can shape our world and what we might do with them as designers and fellow human beings, bring your diverse backgrounds in design, computer science, community development, arts, humanities or social science to work with others to transform visions for a just, caring and sustainable future into realities.
Scope and Practicalities of the research education
K3's PhD education prepares you for a career in research or teaching in academia, as well as cultivating scope for advanced professional work outside of the academic field. The goals of meaningful collaboration with other researchers, and the development of regional, national and international networks fostered by the PhD processes would support both career directions. With relevance to this PhD position, we are consolidating existing research platforms at Malmö University such as Medea and are devoting considerable energy toward the establishment of substantial new research programmes, like the Data Society Research Programme, and research platforms such as Collaborative Future Making and Rethinking Democracy.
More formally stated, and in line with the General Study Plan for third-cycle programme in Interaction Design the aim of the PhD programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required for a PhD student to independently conduct research and thereby contribute to the development of knowledge within the chosen subject area. The PhD programme is worth 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and is completed when the PhD student publicly defends his/her dissertation. The four years of PhD education can be extended in case of, for example, teaching commitments.
As an employed PhD student you are expected to commit to full time research and to be located in the Malmö or Öresund region. Course work, regular supervision, potential teaching commitments and participation in the seminar culture of K3 mean that long distance research is not feasible for this PhD position. Decisions regarding employment of PhD students can be found in Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 1-7 §§.
Eligibility Requirements for PhD students
The General Requirements for third-cycle (PhD) education are that the student has:
1) received a second-cycle higher education degree,
2) completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle, or
3) in some other way, nationally or internationally, acquired equivalent knowledge.
The Special Requirements for this PhD position in Interaction Design are that the student has:
1) knowledge and skills corresponding to a second-cycle degree (master) in Interaction Design
2) knowledge and skills in another subject corresponding to a second-cycle degree (master) that can be argued to be relevant to Interaction Design. Interaction design is a multidisciplinary subject, meaning that relevant subjects can belong to the social sciences, computing sciences, humanities and the arts. If you feel your knowledge and skills merit consideration for entry into Interaction Design you are encouraged to make the case by demonstrating equivalent knowledge that has been acquired in some other way, nationally or internationally.
Basis of assessment
Initial assessment concerns the General and Specific Eligibility Requirements (stated above).
Further, according to Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 5 §, importance is placed on the student's ability to appropriate the advanced learning of the third-cycle PhD programme. In order to support the evaluation of the feasibility of each research proposal, students are expected to submit previously written material, a well-referenced thesis plan and, where relevant, a portfolio along with their application form. (Refer to instructions on the form of the application, below.)
Another important basis of assessment is the degree to which the proposed research can contribute to Interaction Design and the collaborative research environment at K3.
Additional assessment criteria include demonstrated analytical and communication skills, and demonstrated fluency in written and spoken English.
