Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of nearly SEK 2,1 billion per year. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The Division of Architecture and the Built Environment (ABE) researches and develops knowledge about and innovative proposals for how planning processes can be further developed, and how both urban and built environments and buildings can be designed to better meet society's needs and wishes. The division has approximately 30 employees (teachers, researchers and doctoral students).

We want to strengthen our research group within the Research Program "Planning for Walking" with a doctoral student who will gather and utilize knowledge at the local level (from both municipal and private actors) and identify core knowledge and effective strategies for increasing walking as a mode of transport and making it safer.

Subject description
Architecture research includes building design, urban and traffic planning, where aesthetics is joined with functional, technical, practical and economic dimensions in relation to people, sustainability, landscape, and the built environment.

Project description
From a sustainability, climate and health perspective, travelling on foot is a central type of transport to achieve overall national and international goals. Travelling on foot also has a central and clear role and function in daily travel. The form of the built environment - its planning and policy - plays a key role as an enabler or inhibitor of urban outdoor activities such as walking. Here, our streets and public realm can make it more attractive for people to be mobile outdoors and to participate in public life, or it can put people off venturing outside. Different groups have different demands, requirements and motivational factors. Likewise, different built environments - because of climate-related factors, other societal demands on the built environment and different mobility cultures - are more or less aligned to individual groups' demands. Therefore, to accomplish improved health and sustainability, urban planning policy and guidance need to set clear goals and visions for walking for all.

This project is a part of the Research Program for Walking (Financed by the Swedish Transport Administration) and will study what the political and professional vision, as well as the practical reality, is for pedestrians from a policy perspective in Sweden. This involves studies of local and national documents but also the local processes, in relation to international standards and so-called best practice.

Duties
As a PhD student, you will perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research area as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies, including both research and coursework. In addition, you will also carry out departmental duties, such as teaching and/or assisting in other research projects.

Qualifications
We seek a candidate with an MSc degree or equivalent or fully completed course requirements of at least 240 ETCS of which at least 60 ETCS are at an advanced level or equivalent. The degree should be within the field of architecture, architecture engineering, civil engineering, sustainable urban development, or equivalent.

Other important skills are the ability to work independently and take initiative, as well as being able to explore new research areas.

English language skills are required since the research will be conducted in international collaboration, and the results will be presented internationally in scientific journals and at conferences. Swedish/Scandinavian language skills are necessary. Having a driver's license is meritorious, as it will facilitate research work.
