The fields of research will be in mechanics and mathematics with the aim to model, simulate and control friction phenomena in vehicles with respect to tyre, brake and propulsion systems when the vehicle speed is low or zero. This also includes driving with wheel rotational speed close to zero. The aims of the project are: (i) setup a flexible minimal model for analysis (analytic and numeric) of jerk singularities; (ii) setup and analyse a full-scale vehicle model that display the expected behaviours and compare them with predictions from the minimal model; (iii) develop requirements on both numerical simulations and measurements to capture the jerk phenomena; (iv) develop algorithms to detect ensuing jerk during driving; (v) develop control methods utilizing the developed models to minimize the jerk disturbance.
Information about the division and the department
The PhD student will be employed at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2). The main supervisor is located at the division of Vehicle Engineering and Autonomous Systems (VEAS) and the co-supervisor at the division of Dynamics.
At VEAS, the main research areas are within energy-efficient, safe, and adaptive vehicles, and autonomous systems operating in unstructured environments. For more information see
https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/m2/research/veas/Pages/Vehicle-Dynamics.aspx The research at the division of Dynamics, which is a mixture of theoretical and applied activities, is mainly focused on a variety of solid dynamics problems such as vibrational problems, fatigue, wear, contact mechanics, wave propagation, optimization and dynamics of smart material. For more information see
http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/m2/research/dynamics/Pages/default.aspxMajor responsibilities
Your main responsibility will be to pursue research within the project. You are expected to implement, test, and extend existing scientific ideas and concepts as well as propose new ones, and to communicate the results of your research verbally at leading conferences and in writing in international journals. You will be guided by senior researchers at the involved divisions. The position also includes teaching at undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master students.
