The available position is in the research group Waves, signals and systems at the Department of Physics and Electrical Engineering. The research group is a multidisciplinary collaboration between the areas of applied mathematics, mathematical physics, signal processing and automatic control.

Job description
The PhD project, which is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, will be concerned with the optimal switching problem that arises when trying to optimize generation dispatch in energy systems operation.
Optimal switching problems are a class of optimal control problems where the control takes values in a finite set. Such problems have attracted a lot of research interest in the last decades following the discovery of a number of important applications, of which many are related to issues in energy production.
According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies.
The total time of employment may not exceed four years' full-time Ph.D.-studies but may be extended up to 5 years for additional work involving teaching and/or administration duties.
Requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she
• Has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level
• Completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or
• in other way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge.
Specific prerequisites for admission to graduate studies in Mathematics are required.
• a minimum of 120 higher education credits in the subject Mathematics or in subjects related to the doctoral level studies, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other manner either in Sweden or abroad, of which an individual work of at least 15, and
• a good command of Swedish and/or English.
Assessment grounds
Applications to graduate studies are governed by rules in the admission regulations.
The selection of candidates is made with regard to the applicant's ability to successfully complete their studies at the graduate level. The assessment takes into account academic skills documented in scientific works, especially focused on the quality of the theses at the undergraduate level, any advanced work and other scientific or scholarly works. The assessment also takes into account the breadth and composition of the undergraduate degree as well as the picture which the intended principal academic supervisor, examiner, and other colleagues in the research group and the subject obtained of the applicant's potential.
The applicants are ranked by the entity concerned for the graduate education after a statement of opinion is received from the prospective principal academic supervisor with proposals on order of precedence.
Selection among applicants who meet the requirements of §35 and §36 will be made with regard to their potential ability to benefit from the educational programme.
