Hereby advertises a position as
PhD (licentiate) student in Biology with specialisation in Ecology,
formally based at the department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM), division Theoretical Biology.
Duties
As a PhD (licentiate) student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD (licentiate) student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.
The Sustainable Natural Resource Management lab, as part of the division of Theoretical Biology at IFM, does research that aims to transform how we manage resources to ensure food security and water quality around the world with a special focus on cities and their relationship to their agricultural hinterlands. We mix quantitative and qualitative approaches, and collaborate widely across disciplines and with stakeholders, to answer research questions from a systemic perspective.
The position as a PhD (licentiate) student is announced as part of the research project "Urban agriculture as blue-green infrastructure: Can it feed bodies and minds while protecting waterways?" Urban agriculture is increasing in popularity but is an understudied green infrastructure type in terms of nutrients. This project will fill part of this knowledge gap by looking at urban agriculture and nutrient cycling in Linköping Sweden and Minneapolis USA. This includes working with spatial data as well as setting up and running monitoring programs to assess nutrient flows in urban and periurban cultivation systems. Data collection will be informed by stakeholder workshops and interviews to identify further benefits of such systems and how to adapt them to multiple goals. Hence, the PhD (licentiate) student will work in a multidisciplinary environment with close connections to the society and in communication with relevant stakeholders.
The holder of the advertised position is expected to conduct field and laboratory work to quantify the flows of nitrogen and phosphorus through urban agriculture, with a focus on water quality. The objective is to better understand if urban farming could act as a source of pollution.
The work requires responsibility for research, including planning, system flow analyses, field sampling (plant, soil and water), laboratory work, data processing and further analyses. This will be focused on Linköping Sweden, but the student will also have the opportunity to go work in Minneapolis USA for a shorter period.
Qualifications
Qualified to PhD (licentiate) studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.
We are looking for a motivated person with good initiative and organizational skills, and with the ability to work independently. The following documented qualifications are a requirement:
-experience in the implementation of ecological field work
• experience in scientific laboratory work (water, soil, and plant analyses)
• good language skills, oral and written, in Swedish and /or English
• course work or practical experience with either urban agriculture or material flow analyses
The following documented qualifications are particularly meriting:
• knowledge of systems thinking and analyses
• knowledge of statistics (in particular analyses of water quality data that account for temporal patterns)
The following documented qualifications are meriting:
- knowledge of urban ecological infrastructure/nature-based solutions
• knowledge of the ecosystem services framework, sustainable development goals or similar framework for assessing synergies and trade-offs among multiple goals
• knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A PhD (licentiate) student may not be employed during a period exceeding four years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of two years ' full time research training.
Starting date
By agreement.
