The student will be engaged in a large EU project looking into the integration of high-performing cryogenic heat-exchangers in future hydrogen powered aircraft engines. Here the student will have access to an EU network of institutes and industry (20 partners) with the focus of developing future aviation technology. The work will be a combination of numerical and experimental activities, where new concepts are to be developed and validated at Chalmers TRL4 compressor and engine exhaust rigs. The validation will support the development of high-fidelity numerical models for the prediction of detailed flow and heat-transfer phenomena, for accurate estimation of installation effects in upstream and downstream turbomachinery components.

Project overview
The project is related to the development of future propulsion engine technology that has the potential to bridge the gap for climate neutrality in aviation by 2050. This will be done by combining expertise that ranges from aircraft design to engine design and integration, and aircraft operations. The overarching goal is to develop the next generation flight test platform that can support the development of new cutting edge technology.

Information about the division and the department
The research group of turbomachinery and aeroacoustics, consisting of two professors, one associate professor, one assistant professor, three researchers and 10 Ph.D. students, is part of the fluid dynamics division. Our research scope ranges from investigating new aircraft propulsion concepts to the preliminary aerothermal design of novel turbomachinery components and heat-exchangers. We have a strong European network with major aircraft engines OEM's and we collaborate with top European Universities in several EU aviation projects.

Main responsibilities

• Develop a framework to assess the aerothermal impact of heat-exchanger integration in aircraft engines.
• Develop computational fluid dynamic models that accurately represent important integration aspects.
• Validate models using experimental results from Chalmers TRL4 annular wind tunnels
