hela Sverige At Mälardalen University people meet who want to develop themselves and the future. Our 15 000 students read courses and study programmes in Business, Health, Engineering and Education. We conduct research within all areas of education and have internationally outstanding research in future energy and embedded systems. Our close cooperation with the private and public sectors enables us at MDH to help people feel better and the earth to last longer. Mälardalen University is located on both sides of Lake Mälaren with campuses in Eskilstuna and Västerås.
At the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering our students are studying to be for example innovators, entrepreneurs, illustrators, communications officers, network technicians and engineers. Here we have the research specialisations of Embedded Systems, and Innovation and Product Realisation. Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region.

Mälardalen University (MDH) in Eskilstuna and Västerås is one of Sweden's largest university colleges with over 14 000 students and more than 900 employees. It has a long tradition of cooperating with society and has entered strategic agreements with both the public and the private sector. Most study programs fall into one of four main areas: economy, health and welfare, education, and engineering. The MDH research often takes the form of co-creation with external partners on the regional, national and global levels, with the aim to generate useful solutions for societal development. In 1999, MDH was the world's first university to be environmentally certified, and in 2006, it was the first higher education institution in Sweden to be certified for its work environment.
The position is to be hosted by Embedded Systems (ES), which is the most research-intensive research environment at MDH and a national leader in embedded-systems research. Research at ES has a dominating focus on embedded software, with world leading competence in embedded-software development and real-time systems modelling and analysis. Internationally, ES has extensive co-operation and is known for its research as well as its strong industrial links. Industrial partners include major companies, such as ABB, Bombardier, Ericsson, Scania, Skanska and Volvo, as well as many smaller businesses, including several spin-off companies. ES provides a stimulating international research environment, characterized by its cooperative atmosphere, openness, and team spirit - a great environment for a researcher to grow in; with a mix of established and young researchers, several of which are employed or funded by industry. The research is organized in 15 mutually supportive and cooperating research groups, and includes 38 professors, 75 additional senior researchers and more than 80 PhD-students.
Employment is with MDH and education is carried out at MDH.
Position description
The focus of this PhD student position is research into practical probabilistic timing analysis of real-time systems. This is an area of research that has been receiving an increasing attention by the research community over the past years, which traditionally has focused on worst-case timing analysis of real-time systems.
The focus of this research project is two-folded - partly analysis techniques of established and well-known run-time mechanisms of embedded software systems, e.g., schedulers and protocols, and partly development of new run-time mechanisms tailored for probabilistic analysis of their corresponding timing behavior. The former line of work provides solutions applicable for existing embedded software systems, i.e., the solutions are easier to utilize in existing systems. The latter line of work allows for designing and analyzing novel run-time mechanisms that potentially result in a more predictable behavior of probabilistically analyzed real-time systems. In summary, the PhD project will develop several probabilistic timing analysis techniques, following a new direction when it comes to providing analysis of a real-time systems.
The project is funded by the project Swedish Science Council (Vetenskapsrådet) project "Practical probabilistic timing analysis of real-time systems" and MDH.
Qualifications
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).
Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.
Merit
Experience in real-time scheduling and real-time systems is considered as a merit.
Experience with probability and statistics is considered as a merit.
