The department Environment & Fluid Dynamics Centre within the complete vehicle organization works with the attribute areas Aero, Contamination, Environment, Fuel Economy, Climate, Thermodynamics and Weight. The mission is to strengthen the brand by leading the R&D work to develop environmentally sustainable cars in support of the core value Environment and delivering robust cars in support of the core value Quality. The Environmental Attribute and Material Management group is a part of the Environment and Fluid Dynamics Centre and it has the overall responsibility for the environment attribute area within Research and Development. Within the responsibilities of the group are development of next generation environmental strategy, ensuring legal compliance and assessing environmental impact and setting requirements cross programs and advanced engineering projects.

In that case, this is the chance for you! As Ph.D. student at Environmental Attribute and Material Management you have the opportunity to be part of setting the boundaries for a new field. The Ph.D. project at hand, "Management of potential health effects of airborne pollutants in a car cabin", puts the customer in focus and studies the potential health effects relating to the air inside the car, focusing on endocrine disrupting chemicals and particulate matter.

Main scientific questions

• What is the exposure pattern of EDCs (endocrine disrupting chemicals) and particulate matter in a car cabin?
• How to design and complete a chemical risk assessment in a car cabin?
• What chemicals, mixtures of chemicals or particles have the greatest influence on health?
• How to design requirements to implement the findings in the project?

The work will be carried out in collaboration with the Chemistry Department at Umeå University and the Swedish Toxicology Science Research Center (Swetox) at the Karolinska Institute. The position is intended to result in a doctoral degree (four year full-time studies) and the main task of the PhD student is to pursue their doctoral studies which include both participation in research and postgraduate courses.

Main responsibilities


• Sampling and chemical analysis of air and particulate matter
• Development of exposure assessment methodology
• Design of a chemical risk assessment model for car cabin exposures

Required qualifications


• The general admission requirements for third-cycle study programs are a second-cycle degree (master degree) or completed courses carrying at least 240 higher (ECTS) education credits, of which at least 60 are at second-cycle level, or have an equivalent education from abroad or equivalent qualifications.??
• The specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies for this project are completed courses in toxicology or chemistry, or some other subject deemed to be directly relevant for the specialization in question, comprising at least 90 credits at first-cycle level, including one or more second-cycle courses carrying at least 15 credits within the specialization or an equivalent subject.??
• Higher education credits or other proven experience in e.g. environmental chemistry, organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, computational chemistry, chemical exposure science, toxicology, risk assessment, and other topics relevant to the project are a merit.
• Fluent in English, both verbally and in writing.

• At least one year work experience after finished thesis work
• Work with risk analysis and exposure assessment
• Experience from testing and requirement development
• Experience from Automotive development
