We offer attractive technical education at undergraduate and graduate levels and conduct advanced research in several technological areas. The School of Engineering is able to award doctorates in the area of industrial product realization. We collaborate with the surrounding society to develop new technology and spread knowledge to strengthen the competitiveness of companies. Working with us, you are close to colleagues in an international environment with great opportunities to influence and develop.
The research at the department for Materials and Manufacturing is focused on four main areas, related to cast iron and other Fe alloys, Al and light alloys, surface technology and simulation and optimization.
The research approach is focused on the relationship between design, manufacturing process, microstructure and final properties from mechanism to industrial application.
The department today consists of over 35 researchers and PhD students with background in material science and engineering, chemistry, mechanics and physics. The work environment is international and multicultural.
The department owns 1 SEM and 1 FIB/SEM, both fully equipped with state-of-the-art add-ons and detectors and are used extensively for related research and educational activities. There is also another lab with a number of optical microscopes.
Job description
The Microscopist is expected to:
- Schedule microscopy lab activities and take care of maintenance, service and calibration of microscopes and their attachments.
- Develop and share up-to-dated methods and knowledge about optical/electron microscopy and related topics within the department.
- Train personals on-demand for independent and efficient usage of the microscopes and attached detectors.
- Conduct optical/electron microscopy examinations upon request for possible internal and/or external orders.
- Have a continuous contact with microscopy service providers and suppliers for possible software/hardware/method updates as well as organizing educational seminars/workshops together with global experts in the field.
- Conduct the complete procedure for possible procurement of new microscopes and related instruments.
- Thoroughly understand and conduct Good Laboratory Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices.

You should be able to demonstrate experience:
- and proper skills with characterization of materials using SEM, employing analytical techniques such as energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), wavelength dispersive spectrometry (WDS), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD).
- with dual beam scanning electron / focused ion beam microscopes (FIB/SEM), especially TESCAN systems, as well as associated analytical and specimen preparation techniques, such as lamella preparation, STEM imaging, transmission EBSD, transmission EDS, 3D tomography using FIB/SEM (3D SEM, 3D EBSD, 3D EDS), and 3D image reconstruction.
- with in-situ tensile and/or heating tests.
You also need to demonstrate:
- dependability and ability to work effectively, conscientiously, and professionally both independently and in a team environment.
- commitment to technical and scientific excellence as well as timeliness of deliverables.

Due to the international working environment, a good level of the English language, both written and oral, is expected.
A background in metallurgy and materials science will be preferred.
- Demonstrate experience with supporting materials characterization techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD) or computed tomography (CT) or thermo-physical property measurements (DSC/TGA), etc.
- Demonstrate successful scientific/technical record (publications) related to the microscopy.
- Active in attracting external orders or research funds related to the microscopy of metallic components.
The successful candidate is truly interested in experimental work, pays attention to the reliability and quality of the produced work, has passion for research and welcomes new challenges, is self-driven, result-oriented and can conduct teamwork in an international and multicultural environment.
