Neuropsychiatric Epidemiology, refnr 334 417/08 Title: Metabolic
phenotypes, genes, and mental health disorders. Mental health disorders
including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and depression, as well as metabolic
disorders, are rapidly increasing disorders of advancing age, particularly among
women. Metabolic phenotypes and genotypes are related to mental health. Many
have shown that adiposity, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, are risky for
health of the aging brain. The doctorand will join our group of 20
researchers, clinicians, and staff who work together in the NeuroPsychiatric
Epidemiology Unit in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry. We
coordinate population-based studies, originating in Göteborg, having a strong
emphasis on psychiatric outcomes and metabolic phenotypes from mid- to
late-life. Our group receives research funding from the Swedish Research
Council, the European Union, the National Institutes of Health (USA), the
Swedish Brain Power Project, and numerous Swedish foundations. Together with
local and international collaborators, we have expertise in psychiatry,
epidemiology, molecular epidemiology (genetic and metabolic biomarkers),
nutrition, laboratory analyses, statistics, and data base management.
We seek someone with strong analytical and statistical competence, who is
independent and a self-starter. A background in epidemiology, the medical or
biological sciences, and/or genetics, with a focus on human disease is required.
Experience with SPSS and Excel is a plus. We have an extensive data base
containing demographic, biological, and genetic data requiring statistical
analysis, compilation in manuscript form, and submission to scientific journals.
The Huvudhandledare is docent Deborah Gustafson, a Senior Researcher
with the Swedish Research Council. She is also funded by the National Institutes
of Health (USA), the European Union, and the Swedish Brain Power Project.
Professor Ingmar Skoog leads these studies, and is internationally renowned for
his work in psychiatric epidemiology.
