Sustainability including climate change are the challenges of our generation. Volvo's contribution is to offer leading transport and infrastructure solutions enabling societies to prosper in a sustainable way. Hydrogen based Fuel cell technology offers a sustainable solution for the off-road segment, but it comes with its own share of challenges.
A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity from an electrochemical reaction, resulting in water as a by-product. In order to reach maximum energy density liquid hydrogen can be used. Liquid hydrogen has a temperature of -253°C and therefor cooling and insulation is important to take in consideration when utilizing this technology.
Description of thesis work:
The target of the thesis is to develop a working concept model for liquid hydrogen tanks.
Details:
Get familiar with fuel cell technology and hydrogen storage.
Perform a literature study on liquid hydrogen characteristics.
Understand the needs and challenges of implementing a solution for off-road machines.
Design a simulation model to study liquid hydrogen tanks and usage of them.
Perform needed case studies with the model to determine design criteria for off-road usage.
Suitable background of student:
Students pursuing their Masters in Energy Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, or any related studies.
It is advantageous if you have prior experience in topics related to fuel cell and electrochemistry.
You should have an interest in innovation, curiosity to learn new things, good communication skills and an eagerness to understand.
