Do you want to contribute to the future sustainable use of forests? Apply to join WIFORCE Research School!
Biodiversity and the role of forests in climate change are now key social issues that require more knowledge. In order to both sustainably use and safeguard forest biodiversity, a coherent basic science research program is needed that addresses large and complex issues and develops new analytical tools. That's why the WIFORCE Research School, part of the Wallenberg Initiatives in Forest Research (www.slu.se/en/wiforce), was created.
Department of Ecology
We conduct internationally recognized research and education for sustainable forest and agricultural production and efficient biodiversity conservation. Our research on populations, communities and ecosystems are the basis for analyses of the effects of climate and land use change on animals, plants, and soils. Read more here:

Kopparfors Skogar is one of the largest forest owners in Sweden. We produce raw material from forests. Our vision is to create longterm benefits from the forests, by contributing to biodiversity conservation, promoting positive effects on climate, and at the same time create long-term opportunities for harvests. At the moment, Kopparfors has 28 committed employees, located at one of our offices in central Sweden. We have short decision-making paths, which means everyone can make a real difference.

Description:
The Ph D student will be accepted to a Ph D education at SLU and get a permanent employment at Kopparfors Skogar. The supervisor group is led by Thomas Ranius.
Trees are retained at harvesting operations. In this project, it will be evaluated how much tree retention contributes to the landscape-level amount of microhabitats available for organisms associated with large trees or dead wood. Moreover, the life-boating function of retained trees for lichens will be evaluated. This will be done by field studies, analyses of already collected data, and a meta-analysis of published studies.
By working at Kopparfors, the Ph D student is supposed to learn how forestry works and to conduct tasks independently. It will also create opportunities to connect research to applications in operational work.
Qualifications:
We are looking for a candidate who wants to generate new knowledge needed to develop future biodiversity conservation and forest management. Applicants should have a Master's degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, forest science or a similar subject. Advanced knowledge in conservation biology, landscape ecology and forestry sciences is a merit. Knowledge about lichens and experience from field work in forests are merits. Skills in planning, executing, and reporting scientific studies, as well as experience with statistical analyses, GIS and literature reviews (incl. meta-analyses) are meriting. The applicant should have the ability to work both independently and in a team. Proven ability to communicate well in written and spoken English is required. Ability to communicate in Swedish is a merit. If the applicant does not master the Swedish language, that knowledge is supposed increase enough to understand information given in Swedish within two years.
The Ph D student needs to stay away from home during field work in central Sweden, and when working at Kopparfors Skogar. The work at Kopparfors Skogar is planned after arrangement, mainly at weekly consecutive periods.
A driving license is required.
Place of work:
Uppsala (80%) and Ockelbo (20%).
Forms for funding or employment:
Employment as PhD student at SLU with 80% of Ph D student activity and 20% of work at Kopparfors Skogar during 5 years.
Starting date:
January 1st 2026, or according to agreement.

Through our focus on the interaction between humans, animals and ecosystems and the responsible use of natural resources, we contribute to sustainable societal development and good living conditions on our planet. Our main campuses are located in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala, however, the university also operates at research stations, experimental forests and teaching sites throughout Sweden.
SLU has around 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and doctoral students and a turnover of over SEK 3 billion. We are investing in attractive environments on all of our campuses. We strive to provide a work environment characterised by inclusivity and gender equality, where different experiences generate conversations between people and pave the way for science, creativity and development. Therefore, we welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
