hela Sverige Sandvik Coromant R&D Materials & Processes provides methods, resources and competence needed to develop, design and validate materials for cutting tools. The Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) team develops wear resistant coatings that need to withstand high temperatures, pressures and mechanical loads during metal machining. Together with Chalmers University of Technology, and with funding from SSF (Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research), Sandvik Coromant will start a project to investigate wear of CVD coatings.
The aim of this project is to generate a fundamental understanding of the degradation mechanisms in hard CVD coatings during metal cutting. This knowledge will serve as a platform for future product development. We can now offer a position in this project for an Industrial PhD student to study and describe degradation and wear. The location during the PhD project is Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg. After completion of the PhD degree, the position is extended as a full-time R&D position based at Sandvik Coromant in Västberga, Stockholm.
Key performance areas
As a PhD student, your goal is to study and describe degradation and wear of coated cutting tools. Your main expertise area will be high-end electron microscopy analysis, relating the microstructure of the material to the properties of the coated tool, focusing on degradation mechanisms, such as plastic deformation, abrasion and chemical wear. You will be performing analytical electron microscopy of as-deposited and worn tools using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Focused Ion Beam/Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB/SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).
As your placement will be at Chalmers during your PhD studies, you will have support from the local research team at the Division of Materials Microstructure at the Department of Physics. You will also have a great deal of interaction with the Sandvik research team and other related and ongoing projects. Your main supervisor will be Prof. Mats Halvarsson (Chalmers) and your co-supervisor Prof. Susanne Norgren (Sandvik). Part of the project is to share the results with the academic community through scientific papers and conference presentations, in order to develop the knowledge of the physics and chemistry controlling coating degradation; thus enhancing future academic research.
Regular visits to Stockholm, traveling to conferences globally and visiting other universities in collaboration is required.
We are looking for someone with a Master's degree in Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science. Previous work within materials sciences, thin film technology or microscopy is an advantage. Good skills in English, in both writing and speaking, are required for this position.
We place great value on your personal qualities in this recruitment, including an analytical mind, being meticulous and having a lot of patience. You learn from previous experience and are driven to improve your knowledge. You interact well with others, as co-operation with colleagues and stakeholders is important, and you are able to communicate well to share knowledge in the project network.
We actively work to create a workplace that is characterized by diversity and inclusion.
