We believe in the power of people and will support you to reach your full potential. Sound like you? Join us in creating the next generation smart and sustainable luxury cars.

Industrial PhD Candidate - Vehicle Attribute, Solidity

As an Industrial PhD candidate you will be a part of the Craftsmanship & Ergonomics Centre (C&E C). This is an attribute centre at Vehicle Engineering responsible for Solidity, Ergonomics and Perceived Quality. All the attributes are directly linked to the first meeting with the car; how it looks, feels and works. Our contribution is a focus on a luxury impression with the right harmony and quality, a refined, well-built product which is comfortable, uncomplicated and human focused.

You will work within the section Solidity that are responsible for attribute development within Squeak and rattle (dynamic and static) and solid functions. We handle all phases of the development; Annual Work, Advanced Engineering, concept development, industrialization and Current Model Quality. We work in a cross functional work process with Engineering Design, Quality, Styling and Product Planning. One of our major challenges is to improve our capability for attribute verification to meet shorter time plans with reduced number of physical complete vehicles. Absence of Squeak & Rattle (S&R) is a must for premium cars and Volvos position in the market require increased knowledge in this area. This position will support and strengthen Volvo Car Group as a Luxury Brand Manufacturer and is a collaboration between Volvo Car Group and Chalmers University of Technology.
The proposed research question covers a wide range of aspects and it's partially up to you as a candidate to decide focus area. You will also have access to a wide range of testing equipment and facilities and will act in an established international research community through our Squeak & Rattle Arena.

Research question relevant for the position
How can capability and application of the S&R simulation method be increased in order to support concept decisions, detailed design, verification and root cause analysis during virtual development process of complete vehicle?
In order to answer the main research question, the following sub-questions should be answered:

1 What are the limits for using results from a linear simulation to assess a non-linear phenomenon?
2 How can the critical S&R interface be identified in an efficient way?
3 How can the critical S&R interfaces be linked to the S&R assessment criteria?
4 Is it possible to define a one "worst case" load for S&R simulation?
5 What are the limitations of the current stick-slip test regarding the test parameter variation compared to real conditions?
6 Is it possible to refine the S&R assessment criterion for both simulations and testing?
7 For which subassemblies is it possible to replace the S&R test in a complete vehicle by a subassembly test on a quiet shaker table?
8 How to derive design requirements (static/dynamic) for the virtual development process?
9 How can the method be integrated in an optimization loop?
10 What is the impact of the temperature on the S&R simulation?
11 Is there a general rule for assessing the Young's modulus of processed plastic parts?

Required qualifications

• At least M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering or similar
• At least one year experience in S&R and/or FEM simulations
• Fluent in English (written and spoken)
• Experience from testing and requirement development is meritorious
• Experience from Automotive development is meritorious
• Author of technical papers is meritorious

Personal qualities

• Skilled communicator and presenter
• Ability to remove obstacles and enable action by encouraging active participation
• Result oriented and flexible
