The role, Head of Bioscience for the newly-created R&I Innovative Medicines Unit represents an exciting opportunity to shape and operate a function of about 70 biologists. Within this role is the potential to shape the way of working not just for bioscience but, as part of the Innovative Science leadership, to play a wider role in the operation of a multidisciplinary function and in the creation of a strongly innovative, science-driven culture within it. This position offers an opportunity for direct engagement with medicines delivery projects from early Discovery through to Phase IIa.
The role
Key Objectives - as the successful candidate, you will:
• use the full potential of your department to create a fit-for-the-future biology organisation delivering world class science to a rich portfolio of projects aligned to our strategy, and creating a platform for clinical success.
• provide coaching and leadership to department members and peers.
• influence and shape the organisation by providing strategic direction.
• set standards for scientific excellence based on personal expertise and reputation in at least one of the R&I disease areas.
Top-level Accountabilities:
You will utilise knowledge and experience to influence strategic thinking and develop the department to meet future science and business demands. You will also:
• ensure the delivery of portfolio objectives from the Department
• be a sponsor and role model of innovative behaviours (including appropriate risk-taking at all staff levels) driven by a clear understanding of project needs and good science.
• develop staff in Science and Line roles.
• take accountability for your Department budget.
• place a strong emphasis on safety as well as wider SHE aspects.
• as part of the Innovative Sciences Leadership Team, drive the strategic direction of the multidisciplinary unit.
• ensure development of all aspects of the bioscience discipline to meet future project demands within R&I.
• influence, shape and support other aspects of cross functional working, both within and beyond the R&I iMed unit.
