A Geneticist in an international genetics network

Since its establishment in 1995, the Interbull Centre has held a unique position in the international dairy industry. Through a truly international collaboration, the Interbull Centre provides international genetic and genomic services for the improvement of cattle to a worldwide network, involving organisations and data from 37 countries on five continents. Interbull Centre works with some of the world's most renowned animal geneticists represented in Interbull and ICAR Committees and Working Groups for the improvement and expansion of its services.

Interbull Centre is now seeking a Genetic Data Analyst to strengthen the delivery, and contribute to the development, of genetic and genomic evaluations in beef and dairy. The right candidate will join a small, enthusiastic group of people with backgrounds in genetics and information technology. The holder of the position will work in close cooperation with the Service Manager and Interbull Centre Director and work in line with the Interbull Centre quality management system. The Genetic Data Analyst reports to the Interbull Centre Director.

About the position, Duties and responsibilities
As a Genetic Data Analyst at the Interbull Centre, you will be part of the team that carries out the international genetic and genomic evaluations of bovine populations (Interbull and Interbeef). The role involves performing data analysis for service provision and interacting directly with customers, partners and other stakeholders across the globe.

Your responsibilities include:

• Service Delivery: Computation of genetic and genomic evaluations - including data management, estimation of genetic parameters. In-house training to deliver Interbull and Interbeef evaluations will be provided.
• Enhance Current Services, Explore and Implement New Services: Contributing to applied research in conjunction with Interbull and ICAR committees and working groups, service documentation, and support for internal and external users.

Your profile, Qualifications, Experience and Skills Essentials

• PhD in animal breeding, statistical/computational genetics/genomics or related fields.
• Demonstrated strong analytical skills and a minimum of four years' experience with genetic/genomics evaluations of farm animals.
• Proficiency in the following skills: working in GNU/Linux, shell scripting, handling of large data sets, and programming skills (Python or Fortran (or, to a lesser degree, C++ in combination with strong other, listed, essential skills)).
• Excellent oral and written proficiency in English is required, as our working language is English.
• You must be service-minded and able to handle high workload peaks and to take fast and well-motivated decisions.

Emphasis is placed on personal characteristics such as interpersonal skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, curiosity, accuracy, initiative, and the ability to work both independently and as a team player.

Merits

Knowledge, experience or qualifications in one or more of the following areas are advantageous but not essential:

• Good networking skills: strong network in the European or global cattle breeding industry.
• Experience in co-creating research questions with relevant stakeholders.
• Handling of SNP data
• Bioinformatics
• Project management experience
• Good communication and presentation skills.

About us
The Interbull Centre is a section of the Department of Animal Biosciences, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU, www.slu.se), in Uppsala, Sweden. It is contracted by the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR, www.icar.org) to be the operational unit for the Interbull subcommittee (www.interbull.org) and the Interbeef Working Group.

The Department of Animal Biosciences is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for education and research in several basic and applied areas. These areas include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, genetics, breeding, immunology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, epizootology, comparative medicine, food safety, bioinformatics and One Health. Our research covers everything from production animals to sports and pet animals, laboratory animals and wild animals. The department's researchers work on the entire scale from molecular mechanisms and microbiology to the structure, function and behaviour of animals, and how these are affected by breeding, physical activity, care, production, stress, environmental factors and diseases.
