Do you have an interest in many different genres of games, and understand what makes their fans tick? Would you rather work part-time on five different games than full-time on just one? Are you good with people? If so, you should apply for the position of Game Design Specialist for our newly-formed Aux Division.
In this role you will be part of a team of subject matter specialists supporting the Brands and Production Department. This team is responsible for providing expert feedback on Paradox' many products - developed in-house or by our partners - at key points during development. You will investigate aspects of the products that are outside the scope of what Brand Managers, Producers and QA can do. This may include things like source code and build pipelines for programmers, asset production methods for artists and monetization systems for designers.
You will also be on hand to help facilitate communication between stakeholders by providing a channel for technical discussions that often doesn't exist in the Developer-Publisher relationship. In other words, being able to talk designer-to- designer or programmer-to- programmer about a technical issue.
There may also be incidental need for hands-on work and firefighting on the games themselves. Sometimes this will be in the form of "shadow" solutions; alternative ways to solve a given issue.
Responsibilities
Evaluating both Developers and Products from a Game Design perspective
Providing Actionable Itemized feedback appropriate to each project's phase of development
Assisting in evaluating Code and Data repositories provided by external developers; ensure possibility of creating entities using their pipeline/workflow
Assisting in Risk Management and Post Mortems
Providing solutions to challenges within your subject matter field
5+ years of experience as a Game Designer, Level Designer and/or Technical Designer
Proven track record of 3+ shipped games in any of the above capacities
Working knowledge of multiple engines/development environments (Unreal, Unity...)
Excellent grasp of spoken and written English
Desired qualifications
Experience of a wide range of platforms, like PC, Consoles, Mobile, Browser, Arcade, VR - the more the better
Working knowledge of at least one formal Game Design methodology
Interest and understanding of Production / Administrative work
Programming knowledge
Teaching/lecturing experience
Relevant degree
You might be our ideal candidate if you can and have built top-quality games in the past, but are just as happy acting as a force-multiplier for people around you. You understand that being on the publishing side of things means knowing when to lean in and when to lean back, and you are not frustrated by being in an advisory, rather than executive, role.
As an individual, you are proactive and committed to seeing things through. You have the skills and experience to analyze and reverse-engineer submitted products with various levels of transparency, and you're also skilled at extrapolating and making accurate predictions about the future. Finally, you are an accountable person who is quick to troubleshoot matters honestly, even if the outcome is that you're the one who is found to be in error.
We offer a cooperative and playful environment that is equal parts experimental and professional. It's a great opportunity to learn, develop, and excel within the gaming industry. We are a diverse team that welcome everyone with a can-do attitude and a sense of fun. The company language is English but we have more than 25 languages (including Quenya) represented across our two offices in Stockholm and Umeå, Sweden.
At Paradox Interactive we come from many different backgrounds and all have very different experiences. Some of us came here with fresh degrees in programming or engineering, some with many years in the games industry and some with just great skills, attitude and a passion for making games. Together we make the best games we can possibly make while having great fun!
