The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Organic chemistry, Microbiology, Aquatic ecology, Mathematics and Physics. The research group of Membrane Biochemistry now seeks a PhD student for studies of nutrient transport systems in eukaryotic cells.
The research project is part of an international collaboration with research partners in Belgium (VIB Department Molecular Microbiology and KU Leuven) and USA (UC Davis) with the aim to significantly improve our knowledge on the structure, dynamics and regulation of phosphate transport/receptor proteins located in the plasma membrane of eukaryotes, especially in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The student will have the unique opportunity to gain expertise in a wide range of techniques (molecular biology/biochemistry/structural analysis) through multilateral supervision and exchanges between the host laboratories.
Project title: The phosphate transport systems of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae; Structure, function and dynamics of the phosphate sensing/transporting proteins and their regulation at molecular and cellular level.
Applicants should have a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) in a subject area of relevance for the present project. Documented training and experience of Membrane Biochemistry/Biophysics and Molecular Genetics will be of advantage. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7.
The Ph.D. studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level. Successful completion of the post-graduate studies will lead to a PhD in Biochemistry. During the first half of the studies (two years full-time) you will be paid by a post-graduate study scholarship (“utbildningsbidragâ€?) and a Ph.D. position (â€?doktorandanställningâ€?) starting from the beginning of the third year. The starting point for the Ph.D. education is flexible and may be negotiated.
Application should be addressed to the registrar at the address: Registrator, University of Kalmar, S-391 82 Kalmar, Sweden, and should arrive no later than 14 March, 2008. Mark your application with reference number 2.2-96/08.
The application (in English) should contain a CV, documentations of exams and grades, a copy of an undergraduate thesis, a list of at least 2 referees (with fax and/or e-mail info), letters of recommendations, a description of motivation and experience relevant to the research project, and any other documentation that the applicant would like to present.
