hela Sverige Respiratory is one of AstraZeneca's main therapy areas. Our aim is to transform asthma and COPD treatment through inhaled combinations at the core of care, biologics for the unmet needs of specific patient populations, and scientific advancements in disease modification.
From a research perspective we work to understand, treat, modify and ultimately cure respiratory disease with an emphasis on four diseases with significant unmet medical need; asthma, COPD, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Chronic Cough. Recently, we reshaped our strategic focus into three mechanistic and complimentary areas in chronic lung disease: Lung Immunity, Lung Epithelium and Lung Regeneration.
To further strengthen our expertise and capacity in each of these strategic research areas we are currently recruiting world-class scientists. Do you want to join our team?
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The RIA Target & Translational Sciences department is an agile environment, with a culture that is science and patient-focused. Our mission is to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level, identify the most effective target and the right patient population, and close the gap between bench science and bedside clinical practice.
Key aspects of translational science are to establish a platform of evidence linking target to human disease, and the identification and threshold selection of biomarkers for both target engagement and precision medicine. In this pivotal role, you will play a key role to generate this critical data, working in close interaction with project leads, Target Science, Precision Medicine Discovery, Biomarker Discovery, Data Science, ECD and external experts to develop innovative studies, building the critical knowledge essential to close the "bedside to bench" loop.
Accountabilities and responsibilities:
* Design, implement and analyse novel and existing experimental medicine (MEMO) studies to generate evidence for functional relevance of targets in human disease
* Interact with project leads and Biomarker Scientists to design, implement and analyse experimental medicine studies and clinical trials to identify and validate novel biomarkers in human disease
* Works closely with key experts to design, implement and analyse experimental medicine studies to provide human validation for novel biomarkers of patient segmentation
* Develop and deliver recall by genotype clinical studies in close collaboration with Biomarker Scientists
* Leads experimental medicine study tissue analysis in collaboration with RIA IMED scientists
* Work with Data Science to enable knowledge to be made available to other scientists and ensure cross project insights
* Ensure that studies are closely aligned with the 5R's - that the outcome of the work will lead to an increase in probability of success for drug development projects
* Through Head of CDK, report quarterly to the RIA LT: ongoing studies, impact made, gap analysis for studies required for the current and future portfolio
* Work with ECD to ensure efficient and appropriate collection and analysis of biomarker data to enable back translation form clinical studies
* Work with RIA External Innovation to bring in new experimental medicine collaborations as needed
* Ensure good collaboration and communication with ECD for non-intervention/exploratory clinical studies
* Publish scientific results and findings from AZ internal projects and/or with external collaborators
Essential Requirements
This role requires you to drive the development of the position and make the most of the growing impact it can make. With shown leadership capabilities and the ability to be a self-starter you will make the role suit both your expertise as well as the business needs.
* PhD/post-doc in Life Sciences or equivalent, alternatively MD with research background
* Previous experience in implementation and delivery of Experimental Medicine studies, with ability to demonstrate resulting business value
* Track record of delivering in discovery and development
* Evidenced understanding of the drug development process, from lead identification through clinical trials
* Significant experience in pharmaceutical R&D
* Experience and deep understanding of biology, pharmacology, translational medicine and clinical sciences, with pre-eminence in at least one of these areas
* Understanding of payer, regulatory and commercial issues in the pharmaceutical industry
* Excellent written, oral, presentation and interpersonal skills
* Experience in the Respiratory therapy area preferable
