Chalmers Student Union is a non-profit organisation with approximately 13,000 members run by the students at Chalmers. In addition to the non-profit part, Chalmers Student Union owns a business group with hundreds of employees and several companies including student housing, gym / health care, conference and restaurant operations and shop to be able to offer affordable and relevant service to our members. Students are members and we will give them value within the companies they run.
The Student Union works to ensure that Chalmers students and doctoral students get the most out of their study time or their doctoral programme. Quality of education, labour market issues and student social life are our focus areas. With over 50 committees and associations and Sweden's most committed students, we are one of the most active student unions in Europe.
About DOMB
The task of the DOMB is to assist and help individual PhD students at Chalmers with problems that may arise concerning all aspects of doctoral employment and research process. Chalmers student Union and DS' goal is that PhD students at Chalmers University of Technology get the best possible education by having an excellent work environment.
DOMB is hired/employed by the Student Union and should not be bound to other duties which may affect the main responsibilities as DOMB. This means, for example, that DOMB should preferably not be affiliated to Chalmers other than through the DS.
The workload typically is around 35% of a full-time employment but can vary over time depending on the demand for the DOMB's services.
We are looking for someone who has excellent social and communication skills and who are understanding and empathetic. You should be unbiased and solely act to protect the interest of the PhD students. You should also be able to support PhD students in potentially difficult conversations and thus be able to display authority, you are furthermore trusted with keeping absolute confidentiality between the DOMB and their clients.
Neutrality is a main issue this implies that there is no current Chalmers employment or professional connections to Chalmers (or overlapped GU departments).
The main responsibilities
• Offer weekly consultation times at the DOMB office, located in the Student Union Building.
• Offer consultation by appointment.
• Be available to support the student in potentially difficult meetings.
• Be bound to absolute confidentiality and keep confidential case records.
• Continuous reporting to DS and yearly write a report on the DOMB's work.
• Engage with the Doctoral Students' board, the student union's management team, and the leadership at Chalmers to identify and address structural challenges faced by PhD students, and to explore potential solutions.
Qualifications
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, in English and Swedish
• Capable of negotiating with university officials, such as Prefects, on behalf of students.
• Must stand firm yet polite, utilizing research and evidence to support cases, with an intuition for when to escalate or de-escalate situations.
• Skills in concise and clear communication are crucial.
• IOA (International Open Academy) certification is a plus.
• Experience with working conditions at Swedish Universities
Merits
• Knowledgeable in scientific literature on doctoral pedagogy, bullying, sexual harassment, disability, etc.
• Knowledgeable in labour and immigration laws and regulations.
• Experience in handling complex cases, ideally as an advocate.
• Experience as a DOMB.
• Experience in supervision, especially PhD student supervision.
• Teaching experience at university level.
• PhD or a similar experience in research.
• Preferably within engineering or natural sciences.
• Experience with student representation or counselling.
Candidates from HR/admin backgrounds are not preferred due to potential subordination in power dynamics within universities.
Personality
• Have punctuality and respect the agreed meeting time.
• Must maintain total confidentiality, never discussing cases with friends, colleagues, or family.
• Must be completely neutral and non-judgmental towards students.
• Advice should be unbiased, transcending personal prejudices.
• Requires genuine empathy to listen and understand students' issues.
• Willing to be reachable 24/7, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Recognizes the importance of availability in critical situations, potentially including suicide prevention.
Employment
The DOMB is provided with a mobile telephone and access to an office space for consultations at the Chalmers Student Union building.
The Board of the Chalmers Doctoral Students Guild (DS) is the representative body of PhD students at all departments at Chalmers University of Technology. It represents the PhD students' interests in several keyboards and committees at Chalmers.
