Antibiotic resistance in the external environment and the human microflora - application of next generation sequencing technologies

PhD position within the research group led by Associate Professor Joakim Larsson in close collaboration with the research group of Assistant Professor Erik Kristiansson, Chalmers University of Technology. The research involves antibiotics in the external environment and effects on antibiotic resistance. The Larsson group consists of 6 postdoctoral fellows, 4 PhD students and a technician. The groups receives financial support from several funding bodies, including the Swedish Research Council, Formas, Mistra, SIDA, the Environmental Protection Agency and other sources.
Description of research project
The heavy use of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine is a major driving force behind the development of multiresistant bacteria. Antibiotics find their way to the environment through excretion and via effluents from drug manufacturers. This promotes the development of resistant bacteria, which may transfer resistance genes to human pathogens. The overall aim of this project is to study resistance genes in antibiotic-polluted environments and the human microflora. Metagenomic analyses will be used to provide culture-independent information. The work will include, but not be limited to, the analysis of data from next-generation DNA sequencing.
Desired background
It is desirable that candidates to this position have a background in microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, computer science or equivalent. Good computing skills with experience in e.g. Perl/Python, R and/or Unix/Linux operating systems are advantageous. Excellent communicative skills particularly regarding scientific communication in English, both spoken and written, a developed way of critical and creative thinking as well as ability to work successfully in a group is desirable.
