Endocrine disruption of non-genomic progesterone signalling - consequences for gamete transport and sex ratios
Application deadline 15th of July, 2008.
The scope of this PhD-student project is to investigate how the female sex steroid progesterone and exposure to various endocrine disrupting chemicals affect steroid receptor expression,
oviductal ciliary activity, gamete transport and male to female ratios among the offspring in a mouse model. We are convinced that the research will contribute to our understanding of how the
transport of eggs and sperms can be synchronized to facilitate their meeting in the oviduct of mammals. It will also address how different hormonal factors could be involved in sperm
selection, and thus the sex of the offspring. Furthermore, the project will address the potential interference by pollutants in these processes. In the future, this research could pave the way for drugs or other treatments to reduce the risks for ectopic pregnancies in women, as well as measures to prevent exposure to chemicals affecting reproduction in humans and wildlife.
The project involves experiments on mice and advanced molecular analyses. The student will be placed at the Institute for Neuroscience and Physiology within the groups of Joakim Larsson and Håkan Billig (www.physiology.gu.se/endo/). The development and application of ciliary activity analysis together with the group of Dr Mattias Goksör (Physics, GU) is particularly important. The student will be associated with the CEROSS research school ( http://www.ceross.sahlgrenska.gu.se/english/) . The project is funded by the Swedish Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (FORMAS).
We would like to receive applications from qualified students with a background in physiology and molecular biology. To apply, please send a personal letter, a list of completed courses
including grades given, a copy of your exam-project (if applicable) and your CV including references.
Your application together with a filled out application form (available at
http://www.sahlgrenska.gu.se/forskarutbildning/ansokan/doktorandplatser/ ) should be sent to: Göteborgs Universitet, Sahlgrenska akademins kansli, Utbildningsavdelningen, Box 400, 405 30
Göteborg, Sweden.
