The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, GIH, is the oldest sport university in the World. The school is located next to Stockholm Stadium and is Sweden's leading centre of knowledge for sport, physical activity and health. We educate teachers in sport and health, trainers, health pedagogs, sport managers, sport experts and researchers. GIH conducts sport science research, often in close collaboration with other universities and societal partners both nationally and internationally. At present, GIH has 140 employees and about 1000 students.

The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, GIH, hereby announces a position as a doctoral student in the subject of sport sciences. The study area is within the theme area movement, health and environment, and aims to study how environmental factors affect our propensity for physical activity, and in particular work commuting on foot or by bicycle, as well as our environmental unwell-being/well-being during physical activity.

Project description:
The theme area movement, health and environment at GIH seeks to illuminate how physical activity can contribute to public health under conditions of sustainable development (see www.gih.se/mhe). One of the main areas for our studies involves multidisciplinary perspectives on physically active commuting to work through walking or cycling. One aspect of these studies concerns route environments.

The research group has developed a scale (The Active Commuting Route Environment Scale, ACRES) for measuring perceptions and estimates of various environmental factors and the route environments that people use for their commuting on foot or by bicycle.

We have so far used ACRES in applied studies of commuting per bicycle (see www.gih.se/pacs). Now we intend to go further and among other things also study how pedestrians estimate their route environments.

The purpose of the studies is ultimately to create an understanding of how and to what extent different environmental variables, individually and collectively, affect our inclination to want to walk and/or cycle to work. The study area has so far been Stockholm County, but may be expanded. The studies have mainly included quantitative surveys and multiple regression analyses. Future studies are likely to also include more advanced statistical methods and qualitative studies.
