Join a cutting-edge research project at the intersection of AI and materials science, addressing real-world challenges in thermal management for high-performance computing and 6G infrastructure.

We offer:
(1) You will develop marketable skills in AI, ML, and materials informatics,
(2) engage in industrial collaborations and advance your academic career through exposure to cutting-edge research and innovation,
(3) and all of the above takes place in Sweden, a country renowned for its high quality of life, inclusive research culture, and global leadership in science and technology.

About us
The Electronics Materials and Systems Laboratory, part of the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) at Chalmers University of Technology, is a highly interdisciplinary research environment led by Professor Johan Liu. The lab focuses on pioneering solutions at the interface of materials science, electronics, and computational technologies.

About the research project
The rise in computational power demands advanced thermal materials compatible with liquid cooling and immersion systems. This PhD project, part of a national initiative, aims to use AI to design and optimize thermal interface materials (TIMs). It combines machine learning, materials informatics, and experiments to discover materials with tailored thermal properties. Partners include Chalmers, RISE, and Smart High Tech AB.

• Strong English communication and writing skills
• Experience in chemical synthesis, computational materials science, and ML
• Ability to analyze heat transfer and solve open-ended problems
• Interdisciplinary mindset bridging theory and experiment

• for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

• Superb writing skills
• Experience with high-throughput simulations and materials databases
• Advanced heat transfer modeling, especially for TIMs and nanostructures
• A strong interdisciplinary interest both in theory and experiment

What you will do:

• Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Microtechnology and Nanoscience
• Develop and communicate scientific concepts
• Teach or perform duties (20% of time)
• Apply AI/ML to predict thermal properties
• Collaborate with experimental teams
• Contribute to digital twins for thermal systems
• Publish and present research
