Subject matter for the position: Forest industry production systems - Woody plant ecophysiology
Place of employment: Växjö, Sweden
Conditions of employment: 100 %, Time limited employment
Job description
A four-year position is available at the Department of Forestry and Wood Technology, Linnaeus University (LNU), Sweden to assess leaf photosynthetic functional traits, and carbon uptake across multiple woody species and forest ecosystems. More specifically, the successful candidate will carry out, independently and in collaboration, field and laboratory experiments that aim to quantify effects of leaf mesophyll conductance (gm) on the internal CO2 reassimilation capacity. The work entails both field- and laboratory-work as well as photosynthetic modeling. Candidates with an interest in plant anatomy/physiological and model-data fusion are strongly encouraged to apply.
The student will be supervised by Dr. Anna M. Jensen, and based at LNU, but is expected to carry out a part of the research abroad, e.g., at Climate Change Science Institute, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN, and Northern Research Station, USDA Forest Service, Columbia, MO, USA.
According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may work to a limited extent with education, research and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post. The employment is supposed to start in the spring/summer of 2016. The position is located in Växjö, Sweden.
Entry requirements
General requirements:
• The candidate should have a master of science (or other corresponding degree) degree from a relevant field, e.g., in plant biology, ecology or forestry.
• The candidate should have completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or in other way, in Sweden or abroad, have acquired principally equivalent knowledge.
Specific requirements:
• Documented experience in laboratory or fieldwork in plant sciences, or modeling.
• Excellent knowledge of English, written and spoken.
• Driver license.
Preference in the selection of criteria
The selection of the candidate will be based upon quality of thesis (and relevant papers written), grades on courses completed, references, a written test, and an interview. Theses containing elements of original research, and research papers are considered meritorious. Documented experience with different microscopy techniques, and gas exchange measurements is a merit.
