The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source Eric in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Diagnostics Mechanical Engineer.

Job description and responsibilities
Summary: Support the design, procurement, construction and testing of fast wire scanners for the ESS project and for CERN. These wire scanners are based on a custom design developed at CERN. The work will take place over a term of 18 months, culminating in the delivery of complete wire scanner systems. Specific responsibilities include:
• Apply expertise in mechanical design and analysis to the fast wire scanner project
• Coordinate activities with those of other team members at CERN and with technical leads at ESS
• Plan and execute procurement and production.
• Manage the supply chain for the production of 27 fast wire scanner systems.
• As appropriate, visit vendors and oversee fabrication and verification testing.
• Document the design, the verification plan and the test results for each wire scanner.

Required qualifications
Summary of Education and Experience
MS in Mechanical Engineering, plus 10 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Relevant Work Experience
• Designing, constructing, and deploying complex, high performance mechanical devices including most of the following technologies:
• Custom motor designs
• Rotating equipment
• Highly optimized, low-inertia moving components
• Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) processes and design techniques
• Electrical and mechanical vacuum feedthroughs
• Designing and developing mechanical devices for accelerators in general and beam instrumentation systems in particular.
• Experience with particle accelerator projects in the environment of a large research facility is particularly valuable.

Required skills and knowledge
• Proficiency in Catia for design and modeling of accelerator components
• Proficiency in Ansys for analysis of accelerator components
• Demonstrated success in planning and leading procurement and construction projects for custom mechanical components
• Thorough understanding of machine design and demonstrated ability to apply the knowledge to instrumentation systems
• Ability to clearly communicate and document technical concepts and designs

Duration & Location
This is a term appointment for 18 months. It is in fulfillment of a contractual obligation with CERN for production of a specific accelerator component. Your work place will be situated at CERN in Switzerland.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
