hela Sverige Scania is undergoing a transformation from being a leading supplier of trucks, buses, and engines to providing complete and sustainable transport solutions. Together with TRATON and our sister brands MAN, Volkswagen Truck & Bus, and International, we are working to shape the future of mobility with innovative and environmentally conscious solutions. Our values - customer first, respect, team spirit, responsibility, and elimination of waste - are at the heart of everything we do. Together, we are at the forefront of creating a sustainable future.
Role Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Ph.D. student to join our team in the exciting field of Steer-by-Wire (SbW) technology for trucks and buses. This cutting-edge technology replaces electro-hydraulic steering systems with traditional steering column by pure electronic controls of the steering actuator. This decouples the steering wheel position from the angle of the steered wheels, enabling new possibilities for vehicle steering functions that can improve both safety and comfort as well as road mediation.
Job Responsibilities
Research Focus: This project aims at doing research in the human/machine area. It will explore driver acceptance of road condition mediation as well as new functions made possible by SbW. You will use advanced vehicle simulators at KTH but also Scania and VTI to evaluate the system and new functions. Acceptable timing, dynamics, response times need to be explored. Model and define in detail how new functions, enabled by SbW, shall behave. Use simulators for digital verification, invite reference drivers to evaluate. Also use objective measurements like how accidents can be avoided in the simulators. Improve evaluation methods, subjective as well as objective evaluation methods. Expose selected drivers to situations in simulators that can be objectively evaluated.
New function development: Design and implement advanced steering functions for SbW systems in the simulators ensuring logical and understandable performance under various driving conditions as well as proper road mediation. Explore and create new comfort and safety steering functions enabled by SbW technology, such as speed dependent steering, u-split steering assistance.
Who You Are
A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Strong background in vehicle dynamics and with good knowledge in human/machine interaction, control systems and software development.
Experience with programming and modelling languages such as C++, Python, or MATLAB.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
Passion for automotive technology and innovation.
