Calibration Engineer, Engine Control

The section Engine Control is responsible for all software functionality of the Engine Control Module that controls the combustion engine that forms the base for the entire powertrain control system. Typical areas are selection of ignition angles, fuel amounts, camshaft positions etc. The section is a part of Powertrain development within Volvo Car's Research and Development (R&D) division.
The group Start and Emission Control are responsible for the combustion behaviour during the start sequence for both petrol and diesel engines as well as for the software for exhaust emission control for petrol engines. This also includes purge control of petrol fumes from the vehicle fuel tank into the combustion engine.
As a Calibration Engineer your purpose will be to develop optimal calibration during a project, you will test and optimise engine control systems. In order to do that a lot of testing, measuring, modelling and developing of new software algorithms is needed. The Calibration Engineer will be responsible to analyse a lot of test data to find optimum settings for any influencing parameter. Mainly software parameters but also various hardware differences will need to be evaluated. A mathematical skill as well as an understanding of the physics and control systems involved is essential. To be able to test the vehicles in different environment this position requires that you are able to travel around the world.
Main responsibilities

• Carry out, analyse and document tests for calibration purposes
• Suggest technical improvements as calibration data, function or hardware changes
• Create activity plans as well as participate and present plan and status in CL meetings and at section KGs
• Show test needs and request test objects and expedition needs
• Document requirement fulfilment in signoff matrix
• Cooperate with influencing/dependent part system/function area and optimisation activities in them

Required qualifications

• University level education, preferably mechanical, electronics or chemistry technology
• Experience from use of Matlab or similar systems for analytical evaluation
• Drivers license for cars
• Fluent in English
• Some experience from similar product development work
• Possibility to travel during climate excursions
