Do you want to shape the future of remote sensing and Earth observation? Chalmers University of Technology is hiring an Associate Professor or tenure-track Assistant Professor in Satellite Remote Sensing. Join the Department of Space, Earth and Environment with its dynamic research environment and strong industry ties. We are looking for a new faculty member (open rank) in the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Division to advance research in remote sensing instrumentation or information retrieval, and to educate the next generation of engineers and scientists.

About us
The GEO division has a strong track record in remote sensing techniques for studying Earth system processes. We integrate ground, airborne and satellite measurements with instrument development, retrieval methods, simulations and model-data fusion to address key environmental challenges.

Strategically positioned to impact Earth observation science, we collaborate on satellite development, NewSpace technologies, and apply machine learning to retrieve geophysical information from satellite data. Our research drives innovation in instrumentation and retrieval algorithms, and tackle climate change, air pollution, natural hazards, and land/ocean transformation while delivering solutions for environmental sustainability.

Your role

• Conduct research on satellite remote sensing, instrumentation or information retrieval
• Collaborate with leading external partners and engage with stakeholders across academia, industry and society
• Supervise and mentor students at all academic levels
• Disseminate your research in scientific publications and conferences
• Contribute to teaching and curriculum development at the bachelor's and master's level

Associate Professor (Tenured Position)

• A permanent faculty position for an established researcher
• Lead high-impact research, publish in top-tier journals, attract funding and advance as an educator

Assistant Professor (Tenure Track)

• A four-year faculty position with tenure assessment
• Conduct independent research, publish in leading journals, secure funding and develop teaching skills

What we offer

• 4-year full funding for a PhD student is included in both positions
• Leadership training, mentoring, and relocation support
• Language course for non-Swedish speakers
• An inspiring work environment in Gothenburg, committed to equality and diversity (GENIE Initiative)

Qualifications
You are an independent and ambitious researcher capable of performing research at the international forefront. The ideal candidate will have the vision and capability to shape future satellite missions and space-based environmental observation systems. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research will complement and strengthen our existing expertise in microwave radiometry, synthetic aperture radar, and optical spectroscopy, while bringing new capabilities in areas such as innovative sensor development, retrieval algorithms, novel applications, and other forward-looking areas. Experience of working with international programs for satellite missions is a merit.

Associate Professor:

• A PhD degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Remote Sensing, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field
• Strong research and teaching track record
• Experience as assistant or main supervisor of PhD students
• Pedagogical training, including a course in research supervision (if pedagogical requirements are unmet, candidates may complete training within two years of appointment)

Assistant Professor:

• A PhD degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Remote Sensing, Earth Sciences or a closely related field (*within last 7 years, with exceptions for leave).
• Demonstrated research potential
• Supervision of BSc/MSc students
• Merits: Teaching experience, pedagogical training. PhD student co-supervision.

Both positions require strong verbal and written English skills. If Swedish is not your native language, we expect you to acquire sufficient knowledge to be able to communicate and teach in Swedish within a few years.

• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions from the 7-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.

Selection Process
This is an open-rank position (Assistant or Associate Professor), with the level determined by the candidate's qualifications. Evaluations will be conducted by the department, the Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee, and external reviewers, following both the job criteria in the ad and Rules of Procedure - Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty.

For detailed academic requirements, see:

• Associate Professor: Appointment Regulations, section 6.3
• Assistant Professor: Appointment Regulations, section 6.4

Regarding the Associate Professor position: Applicants who do not yet meet the formal pedagogical requirements may be hired permanently, provided they complete the necessary pedagogical training within two years. A well-structured pedagogical portfolio is however essential to attach in your application.
