This position offers the successful candidate close engagement in research, education and innovation in Chemical Process Engineering.
You will join an open and collaborative working environment focused on developing methods and solutions that enable a sustainable and competitive industry in areas where Chemical Engineering are present. You will also be encouraged to explore your own research trajectory in relation to current societal challenges within the Chemical Process Engineering area.
Information about the department
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is one of the largest departments at Chalmers. We represent a broad field of fundamental and applied research and education within chemistry and chemical engineering. Our research activities reach from fundamental chemistry, chemistry at the interface of biology and medicine, materials science, renewable energy, to chemical engineering processing, material recycling, nuclear chemistry, as well as theory and modelling. We are committed to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, as well as postgraduate level.
Academic freedom, interdisciplinary research, entrepreneurship and making societal impact, are key factors in our work. We strive to offer an environment where you can combine world leading research and teaching with a good work-life balance.
The position's field of research
There are many important future challenges in society that require chemical engineering competence. This calls for strong research as well as teaching in this subject. One crucial area is the transition to a bio-economy: to make this happen it will be necessary to develop and design novel processes for the manufacturing of chemicals, materials and fuels from renewable sources. Another critical area for the future is energy storage, where large knowledge is needed in chemical engineering for example in battery development. There are also many other important areas for Chemical Engineering research in the future, such as recycling, process intensification, more energy efficient processes, etc. To develop these chemical engineering processes fundamental understanding of chemical engineering operations, such as e.g. separation (mixing, distillation, drying, filtration, etc), mass/heat/energy transfer and/or energy storage, is of outmost importance. This calls for innovative experimentation on the laboratory scale.
We aim to further strengthen Chalmers' position and visibility within the Chemical Process Engineering area, as well as to continue to forge new alliances and open up new collaborations to address current and forthcoming applications of relevance to society and industry. In this process, there is also a need to maintain a proper balance between fundamental and applied research within the area. Such a continued strategic development of Chemical Process Engineering research at Chalmers has the potential to significantly contribute to the realisation our overall vision for a sustainable future.
Major responsibilities
As an Associate professor in Chemical Process Engineering, you will attract and lead externally funded research projects related to the Chemical Process Engineering area. One of your major responsibilities will be to lead a research group in Chemical Process Engineering, focusing on experiments in the area of chemical engineering operations, such as e.g. separation (mixing, distillation, drying, filtration, etc), mass/heat/energy transfer and/or energy storage.
Over time, you will also contribute to Chalmers' education at all levels by supervising students, teaching and participation in improvement of courses. Furthermore, we would like you to develop an industrial network to utilize the results of your research activities and to enable the identification of coming industrial trends and challenges within the Chemical Process Engineering area. You will be expected to take part in leadership and administration within the department and/or the university. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.
Qualifications
You are an independent researcher with a good overview of the Chemical Process Engineering area, where chemical engineering operations are central subjects such as e.g. separation (mixing, distillation, drying, filtration, etc), mass/heat/energy transfer and/or energy storage. You have experience in supervising PhD students and post-docs. Your scientific output is well documented and your ability and will to collaborate outside of academia, such as with industry, are strong and sincere. It is a requirement that you have experience in formulating research questions and that you have attracted external funding as a principal investigator to build your own research group with PhD students/post-docs.
You enjoy working in a team and have the skill to lead and develop people. You also have the ability to network and connect with different stakeholders, both nationally and internationally. Teaching in Chemical Engineering courses at different levels is part of the position, and you must therefore be accustomed to teaching and be a skilled educator.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish on the undergraduate level after four years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
