About the role We are looking for an AI & Robotics Scientist with strong expertise across data science, robotics, and software engineering to drive the next generation of data-driven industrial automation solutions. With a proven background in model-driven engineering, applied machine learning, and interdisciplinary research, you will play a key role in transforming industrial data into actionable insights, optimizing processes, and bridging the gap between AI innovation and operational deployment.
This role is ideal for someone who combines curiosity, technical knowledge, and hands-on experience across academia and industry. Someone who thrives in working at the intersection of research, engineering, and applied data science.
Your responsibilities include:
Lead the development of machine learning and AI models for automation use cases such as predictive maintenance, mission assurance, and process optimization.
Design and implement knowledge-driven approaches (e.g., knowledge graphs, model-driven engineering) to improve data reusability, verifiability, and interpretability.
Architect and manage data pipelines integrating IoT sensors, robotics systems, and industrial control environments.
Translate advanced data science methods (e.g., statistical modeling, graph analytics, optimization) into robust, real-world industrial applications.
Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams (automation engineers, researchers, industry partners) to align analytics solutions with operational goals.
Mentor colleagues, contribute to capacity building, and supervision experience to strengthen organizational knowledge.
Contribute to research and innovation projects (e.g., EU/Vinnova/Energimyndigheten) by preparing technical content, and reports.
Act as a bridge between academic insights and industrial practice, ensuring that innovative methods are practical, explainable, and industry-ready.

About you
You have a PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Robotics, or Automation Engineering.
You enjoy working across domains, from robotics and automation to data-intensive applications.
You have a proven ability to communicate complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
You thrive in collaborative environments, with experience across academia, industry, or applied projects.
You are motivated by turning research into practice, ensuring that advanced methods lead to real-world impact.

What we would hope you know
Hands-on expertise in machine learning, statistical modeling, and optimization techniques.
Strong programming skills in Python (including Pandas, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow/PyTorch, NetworkX).
Familiarity with robotics and automation systems, including mission design, or control theory.
Understanding of industrial data sources and protocols (time-series sensor data, OPC UA, MQTT, KPIs).
Experience in data visualization and analysis for decision-making and reporting.

Other qualifications
Experience with knowledge graphs, ontologies, and semantic data technologies.

About the position and application The position is a permanent position with a six-month probation period. Our office is centrally located at Chalmers and you are offered a hybrid solution where you have the opportunity to alternate office work with work from home.
