Are you passionate about advancing safety technology and making a tangible impact on the protection of military personnel? This Master Thesis project, conducted in collaboration with Combitech and BAE Systems Hägglunds, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the creation of cutting-edge finite element (FE) models for personal protective equipment such as vests and helmets. Join us in this exciting endeavor to enhance the safety and reliability of protective gear, ensuring that military personnel are well-protected in the line of duty.

Background

During the development of combat vehicles at BAE Systems Hägglunds, one of the main drivers is to protect the users from injuries. This is today verified with anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs), often called crash test dummies, which are developed for the automotive industry. Both physical and virtual ATDs are used to verify compliance with military standards and customer requirements. Personal protective equipment like vests and helmets are used in the physical testing. Such equipment is important to predict the correct behavior also when doing finite element simulations. However, in contrast to the ATDs, where validated FE models are readily available, this is not the case for military personal protective equipment.

Objective

The students should develop FE models of protective vest and helmet to be used in conjunction with available ATDs. The models should preferably be scalable to fit different versions and sizes of ATDs, and generic enough to cover equipment used by different customers. The work includes:

* Literature survey
* Definition of geometric models based on physical parts
* Development of FE models for LS-Dyna including material models
* Physical verification of models, e.g. drop test, followed by fine tuning of models
* Report and presentation

Who are you?

We are looking for two Master program students, Mechanical engineering with specialization in Applied Mechanics or equivalent. The work will be carried out at Combitech in Trollhättan in close collaboration with BAE Systems Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik.

As the position involves work that is covered by confidentiality, it is required that you complete and pass a security assessment.

Selection is ongoing. We look forward to your application!
