The Research and Development Department of Meteorology at SMHI is looking for a motivated summer intern (f/m) to support ongoing research on climate variability and atmospheric aerosols within an international research environment.

About the project:

This project investigates how the leading modes of climate variability, El Niño and La Niña, shape air quality over Southeast Asia, with a focus on atmospheric aerosols. Using simulations from a state-of-the-art climate model, we analyze how the ENSO climate patterns influence regional aerosol behavior through changes in their distribution, emissions, transport, and removal processes.

As part of our team you will have the opportunity to:

• Strengthen your skills in scientific data analysis and programming
• Gain insight into applied research at a national meteorological institution
• Work in a collaborative, international, and multidisciplinary environment
• Contribute to research relevant for climate variability and air quality impacts

Your tasks will be:

• To support the analysis of climate model output (NetCDF format)
• To process the data, visualize and carry out statistical analysis of atmospheric composition and climate variables
• To provide general support to the research team

Your profile:

• You are currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree (3rd or 4th year) in meteorology, physics, mathematics or a related field
• You can communicate effectively in English
• You should have the experience and knowledge of programming languages (Python preferred, R, or Fortran)
• You have knowledge of Linux/Unix environments, including basic command-line tools
• You demonstrate a strong interest in atmospheric science

Please send your complete application (cover letter, CV, one reference letter) until March 30, 2026.
